Monday December 13 Day 3

Today we practiced editting text by fixing the morning message.   There were capitals in the wrong place, missing words, and missing punctuation making it hard to understand the message.  We then did a recount in  our Journals, focusing on identing, and using time words  at the same time thinking about all the things good writing should have.

After recess we did the last round of Math activities.

After lunch we worked on another piece of explanatory writing.   Today we explained "How to Brush Your Teeth."    When acted out, we saw that many important details were missing.  It is important to explain things clearly and with detail.    After that we did our literacy activities.  One group read with me, one group did penmanship, "Tt, and Ii".

It was very cold so we had indoor recess. After recess was over we did our Lesson 13 spelling test, and had the choice of finishing our Journal, doing Spelling 14 and/or working on Writing Workshop.

Thursday December 16 Day 1

Well excitement is mounting, and we are having trouble containing our desire for the winter break.    We did the morning message  and then we worked on completing our multiplication activities and read more of Matilda.

After recess, we completed Spelling Lesson 14 in class, so that we could have our Spelling Test tomorrow and we won't have to worry about studying over the holiday.    Those completed their Spelling worked on Winter and New Year's themed wordsearches.

After lunch we had a Recognition Assembly.  Students in each class were recognized for their demonstration of  respect and responsibility.    In our class,  Hannah and Onika were chosen for respect, and Kyral and Ezra were chosen for demonstrating  responsibility.   The class nominated one student in each category, after we read names and comments from the respect and responsibility post-it wall.  Congratulations!!
Hannah, Kyral, Onika and Ezra show their certificates.
Last period we used chalk to draw winter scenes.   It was hard to focus but many tried really hard to create a wintery picture.

Thanks Mrs. Wagman for mentioning that my posts have not been up since Dec. 10.  I had written them and for some reason they did not get to the blog.  Oops.
HOMEWORK: Complete Lesson 14 and study for tomorrow's test.

Friday December 10 Day 2

We began our day off with Gym.   Everyone was exhausted afterwards with all the running.   Floor hockey will do that, I guess.

When we came back to class, we did the temperature graph, our message on the whiteboard and afterwards we worked on completed questions from the stories we are reading.   This seemed challenging, so we will have to work on them again next week.

After recess we did more " Marth."    In math we are looking at 3D solids, so today we learned how to draw 3-dimensional shapes, and also learned how to shade shapes to look more realistic.    We did a practice round, and then we did the activity again looking more closely at shading.  Next week, we will do a good copy, and learn how you can use overlapping to create depth in a picture.      We  then completed another chapter in Matilda.

Olivia used chalk to add shadow to her drawing of 3d solids.

Samantha's animals examine her use of two colours to create shadow in her drawings of a sphere, cylinder, cube and pyramid.

After recess, we organized our desks, did some independent reading, and to close the day we had a brief session of Open Mic.

Thursday December 9 Day 1

It was very cold today and it is still a struggle to get everyone into their boots and coats and mitts.   We are getting there, slowly but surely.    Today we graphed the temperature which was the lowest temp. we have had so far this year.    We then added missing punctuation to the morning message the Smartboard.     We then did our Math activities.   Building geometric solids, estimating and measuring objects, and multiplication.  In multiplication we are able to draw a picture a math fact, write a repeated addition sentence, and some of us are able to show the multiplication on a number line.   Soon our goal will just be to commit the facts to memory.

After recess we had a Music period.   We did some singing.   We listened to the Beatle's song  "Hello, Goodbye" and sang along to the lyrics from a video on Youtube.   I was amazed at how much information some students had about the Beatles.    Another song we learned was "Gotta Keep Reading."   It is a song that uses the music from the Black-Eyed Peas "I Gotta Feeling."   We also used the lyrics to this to practice our choral singing, but also reinforce some reading skills.     We also talked about how poets, and people who write music sometimes change words to fit the beat... eg.)  " It's gonna be a good book"... instead of " it is going to be a good book" fits the beat of the song.

After recess we went to DPA with Mr.Brutto.  Shortly afterwards Emmanuel arrived to do  his work with Roots of Empathy.    He read a story called "Suki's Kimono".   He talked about feelings, and we shared stories about when we were sad.   We also discussed strategies we can use to help someone who is crying, angry or mad.

We went to the computer lab. last period and practiced some keyboarding skills.    It was challenging for them to get fingers onto the proper keys and use proper posture while using Ultra Key.

HOMEWORK: Spelling Lesson 13 to be completed and handed in.

Wednesday December 8 Day 5

Today we started off our day in the Library with Mr. Brutto.

When we returned we completed the morning message, our temperature graphs and started a new round of Math activites.   One group worked at building 3D structures and looking at how the shapes of faces are different on pyramids and prisms.  Then sketched the models in their books.    Another group worked on linear measurement.  They had to estimate and measure several objects and record their answers in a table.  The remaining two groups worked on multiplication activities. One group used bingo dabbers and dice to show multiplication and addition sentences on paper, and one group completed  math sheet that reviewed repeated addition and how to use skip counting to multiply.

After lunch we did some cursive writing.   We did the letters B and F.  These letters were a bit more challenging.  Some students are frustrated because their letters aren't perfect.  We are just beginning so with practice things will get easier.  For some, it is easier than printing.

We then looked at our next form of writing which is  explanatory writing.   It is writing that explains how something is made, how to do something  or how to get somewhere.  It can be step by step or in paragraph form.  We will be doing a paragraph form to start.    Today we wrote how we get from outside the school to the class entrance in the morning.

Ms. Jean was here and she read from Matilda.   After recess, we practiced answering comprehension questions in full sentences and adding supporting details.   We answered questions from Matilda.

Tuesday December 7 Day 4

Today we used the ELMO overhead projector to look at each others work and offer some tips as how to make it better. After graphing our temperature we looked at some student work to see if they had all the elements on the graph ( title, labels, scale, key, proper recording of info.).   We then completed the morning message that was missing several vowels.   Many students have trouble with choosing the correct vowel, or pair of vowels when spelling.

The class then had Gym with Mr. Costa.

After recess we started to look at 3D solids.  We reviewed what we had learned in Grade 1 and 2 and named several shapes.  We also looked the attributes of some solids and looked at whether they had flat surfaces or curved surfaces, and which shapes could stack and which could roll.    We then completed a worksheet that  let us create a sorting rule for shapes listed on the paper.

After lunch we  used the ELMO again to look at some Journals.  I was very impressed that the students were able to identify the form of writing their classmates were using.   We are also using the "bump it up" strategy to improve writing.   We looked at what Level 4/ A  writing should look like.  We then looked at some student samples telling  what we liked about their writing and what would bump it up to make it better.  In general the students noticed that it would be better if there was more writing, and better penmanship.   We are also looking at adding detail.    The class was very good at identifying descriptive, recounts, letters and opinions.

We then worked really hard at completing our posters that we started a couple weeks ago.   After the posters were completed the students had to write about their poster.  They had to tell what was the message, who was the poster for, where would they place their poster, and what would grab a   viewers attention.  I will post some examples later in the week when they are all complete.

After recess, we continued to work on posters and those finished worked on their Spelling Lesson 13 activities.

Monday December 6 Day 3

Well it was the first snowy day so we have to adjust our timing in getting in and out of our snowpants, boots, mitts, hats etc.   We talked about making good choices in playing in the snow.   It is a good idea to keep the snow on the ground and also, not to roll around in the snow and put it on our heads if we are not in proper clothing.   It can be very uncomfortable sitting in wet clothes.

We did our morning message and we talked about different festivals of light around the world.  We talked that eventhough we may have different beliefs or customs, we all use similar symbols.  We talked about how many festivals of light take place during winter when the daylight hours are reduced.

We went to DPA/Drama with Ms. Leung.

After recess we did our Math activities.  We completed the final round of activities from last week.  We built structures of Lego in specific dimensions, we used calculators to solve addition and subtraction questions, we worked on illustrating multiplication sentences and repeated addition and one group practiced adding skills to 20 on the smartboard trying to see how many correct answers they could get in one minute.  It got quite competitive.

After lunch we talked about how we can improve our writing.    In our expository writing we talked about how we need to add more details.    In general we discussed how many of us didn't like writing and that is why we don't write much.    So, in an effort to get more writing on paper, we wrote in our Journals and the goal was to get at least 10 sentences in 40 min.   The students could write in any of the forms we have studied so far ( descriptive paragraph, recount, opinion.. some tried narratives).     We then had our Spelling test, and some continued to work in their Journals while others began Lesson 13 in Spelling.

After recess, we talked about air and water pollution and in specific the garbage in the ocean.   We talked about the plastic continent in the Pacific and how it impacts animals.   We watched a  video on the effects this is having on many habitats.   We then looked at what causes air pollution and looked at a picture and identified different sources of air pollution.   The Gr. 3's did step one of an activity that will look at erosion of soil.

HOMEWORK:   Spelling Lesson 13  alpha order, syllables
Journal :  Write at least ten sentences on a topic of your choice, in the form of your     choice.( descriptive, expository, recount etc.)  The goal is ten sentences!!
(Almost 60 min. was given in class, and only 5 students completed the goal.)
Food Drive:  bring in donations... our class is currently at 33 units.  Thank you.

Friday December 3 Day 2

The class was very excited today to have Gym after missing their Gym last week for the puppet performance.
After returning to class we read the morning message which was written in cursive.   It was challenging, but we did it.    We then practiced working on cursive letters, E,L,K and H.  We are doing letters with similiar strokes and starting with the simple letters.

After recess we did our Math activities.   We did the same as yesterday, with one group practicing number skills on the computer and whiteboard on http://www.coolmath-games.com/.    You might like to try these games at home.

After lunch we finished our "Marth"  which looked at Kandinsky's artwork and focused on geometry concepts covered this term.    The rules of the art was that they were to contain at least one circle, have acute. obtuse or right angles, there must be parallel lines, have other geometric shapes and there must be overlapping.    Today we finished painting, added chalk pastel  and traced our pencil lines with black crayon.

Thursday December 2 Day 1

As usual, we  graphed the daily high and low temperature and today Mikayla lead the morning message.   Students added missing punctuation to message.   After we completed that we did our Math activities.
One group focused on repeated addition and mulitiplication sentences, one group did questions from the Math textbook on multiplication, one group practiced using a calculator for addition and subtraction and the final group used lego to build simple structures of given dimensions.   e.g.)  Build a structure 8cm high and 6 cm wide.  They then drew scale drawings on centimetre grid paper in their math books.

After recess, each student  wrote a persuasive letter to a friend that declined an invitation to a party they were hosting.    We focused on letter form, persuasive writing (reasons and support) and proper writing conventions.

After recess we did DPA with Mr. Brutto, and read more of Matilda.    Baby Teagan came today.  We observed her and noticed how happy she was today.  We also sang a lullaby to see how it soothed her.   We measured her and found that she had grown 2cm and is now 63cm.    We also noticed that in 3 weeks since her last visit that she is able to hold her head up without much support.

After recess we went to the computer lab. and used Word to type the letters we composed this morning.  We practiced saving a document into our own file, change font and use conventions like two spaces after a period.     We need some more practice with keyboarding.  One finger typing takes a really long time!

Wednesday December 1 Day 5

We started the day off with a visit to the Library for a book exchange.
When we returned to class we read the morning message and identified all the mispelled words.     We then watched a breif video from the Jewish Children's Museum on the story of Hannukah.       We then returned to our desks and made new temperature graphs for December.

After recess we introduced the idea of multiplication. Looked at repeated addition, and we also looked at the "x" as a symbol.    In the number sentence 3x4... we read it as 3 groups of 4.    We drew pictures to show what this means.  The first number is the number of groups... the second number is how many things in each group.   We then added a repeated addition sentence.   3x4= 4+4+4 .  I also introduced the term
product, more for the Grade 3's.

After recess we read the story Oonga Boonga and did  drawing to go with it for our visit with Baby Teagan tomorrow.  It was about what maked a baby cry and how we can understand that babies cry and it can get frustrating for people.

Ms. Jean popped in to say hi, and while we were doing our Literacy Groups so that was a nice help today.
We also read another chapter of Matilda.   She added peroxide to her fathers hair tonic and his jet black hair is now a dusty grey colour.

After recess we talked about Traditions and Celebrations.  we completed a sheet to the best of our ability and the sheet was sent home so that parents could add some more detail in terms of geographic heritage, languages, cultural foods, religion etc.

HOMEWORK:  Social Studies sheet.

Tuesday November 30 Day 4

Today with read the morning message, did our spelling corrections and completed our temperature graphs.

We went to see a puppet performance called " O if for Ogre".    The puppets were interesting and the students had some great questions for the  puppeteers.

After recess we did some work with centimetres.  We estimated and measured lines and objects.    Everyone has a good understanding of how to measure things with a ruler, but we need to practice being accurate in placing the ruler at 0.

After lunch we read two chapters from Matilda.   Matilda is getting revenge on her mean parents in variety of ways.   She hid a parrot in the fireplace to make them think they had ghosts, and she amazed her father with her arithmetic ability so much that her father got angry.

We then worked really hard in trying to complete our expository paragraphs.  Most students completed their work, and only a couple are left to be completed.

After recess we did some science.  Gr. 2's did some experiments with moving air.   We need air to breath, but we discussed how we use air for other things.  We then explored how we can use our own air to move things. Students had to predict many breaths it would take to move five different objects about 4m.  We moved ping pong balls, marbles,  crumpled paper, flat paper and a linking cube.  We then tested whether our predictions matched what we expected. We recorded our observations in a table.   Later we will explain why some things were harder to move than others, and why some students could move objects easier than others.  What are the variables?   the Gr. 3's did detailed lablelled diagrams of the soil samples they created.  Now that the soil and water mixture has settled, there are definate layers in our jars.   We will explain why the layers contain the types of soil they do.

HOMEWORK: Spelling Lesson 12  Sentences.  Alpha order/syllables if not complete

Monday November 29 Day 3

We did our temperature graphs and read the morning message.    We reviewed some measurement terms and talked about measuring things using a ruler... always starting at zero.   We also looked at millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres and talked about how are system is based on the number 10.  We will keep talking about this.

After recess we traced our hands and practiced making measurements of the length and width of our fingers and hands.   When does it make sense to use mm and when do we use cm?

After lunch we worked at completing our expository paragraphs.  We are putting our ideas from our organizer onto lined paper and will start editting.    Many students are not happy with rewriting something more than once.  I will continue to stress the importance of revising and editting written work.

We then completed our Literacy Activities and read another chapter from Matilda.

After recess, we completed our spelling test and began Lesson 12 which is a review lesson.

HOMEWORK:  Spelling Lesson 12.  alpha-order, syllables.

Friday November 26 Day 2

We started our day off in the Gym with Mr. Costa.
After gym we read the morning message on the whtiteboard, looked for nouns and then did a review of expository writing.   We then went to our desks and added supporting details to our opinions.

After recess we had a pop quiz on rounding, congruent shapes and fact families.  It was also Ms. Jeans first quiz for the class.

After lunch we did Marth.  Yes, Math + Art  = Marth.   We reviewed several concepts in geometry ( angles, lines, parallel lines, arcs, circles etc.) by looking at the work of Wasily Kandinsky, the abstract artist.   Below you can see Kandinsky's art, Jack painting his work, and Kyral in video explaining our art.

After recess we had a farewell party for Ms. Jean.  We will really miss her.  We know she will be a great teacher and we wish her luck in her next placement.   Our letters our sent and the students in Korea are eagerly waiting for them.    We can expect our letters back early in the new year.

Thursday November 25 Day 1

Today we did our temperature graphs and then did our final round of activities on fact families and congruent shapes.   After recess, we added some information and labels to the meals we created yesterday.

After lunch we went to Mr. Brutto for DPA.  When we came back we did some media literacy activities looking at the movie trailer for Matilda, which is based on the book we are reading in class.   We  watched the video without sound, we listened to the trailer without images and when we watched it together we talked about what made the trailer interesting.  We also talked about editting and how that can grab our attention.  In the 2min and 18s clip we counted over 100 edits.

Emmanuel came to the class to do our work for Roots of Empathy.  We talked about why babies cry and how you can soothe a baby.   Some students practiced holding a baby doll in the correct way to help pacify a crying baby.   We also talked about temperment and mood and how babies can have different temperments and moods just like we do.

After recess we did our literacy activities.

HOMEWORK: Reading Response.    Use one sentence starter from each section.   Add two more sentences for additional detail.   Goal: 9 sentences or more!

Wednesday November 24 Day 5

We began our day with a visit to the library.   While there we did a book exchange and also made good-bye cards for Ms. Jean.  She only has two more days left.

When we returned to the class we did our temperature graphs, correctly spelled our mistakes from the Spelling test and also worked on penmenship.

After recess we did some review of congruency and fact families.

After lunch we started to work on our expository writing.  The students were given a graphic organizer to help them organize their ideas.  Students had a choice of what to write about and agree or disagree with that statement.
1) Students should be in bed before 8pm.
2) Students should wear uniforms to school. or
3) Area 203 needs to improve their learning skills.
Each student was asked to make a title, a then write their opinion statement.     After that, we came up with our first reason to support our opinion.   Tomorrow we will work on supporting details, and start reason 2.

We then did a healthy eating activity.  Ms. Jean directed the students to create a  healthy meal using food flyers, magazines etc. and think about proper servings and eating from food groups.  After recess, we worked in our Literacy groups.   Grade 3's did a soil experiment and will complete it tomorrow.

Monday November 22 and Tuesday November 23 Day 3 and Day 4

I was absent yesterday but Ms. Jean said things went well and things were accomplished.    I saw the work that was completed on congruent vs. similar shapes.   Congruent means equal or same size and shape, while similar means same shape.    Ms. Jean started a series of lessons on healthy food choices and using the Canada Food Guide.     The students completed a spelling test for Lesson 10 and began work on Lesson 11.

Today was busy and we noticed early in the day with our temperature graphs that there was a very large difference between the high and low temperatures.   After we did the temperature, the students were asked to complete the Journal entry they started on Monday.   They had the choice to write about :
a)  What did they learn from their parents after the interview ?
b)  How could Mr. Singbeil change the class to make it better?

After recess, Ms. Jean taught the class about fact families in Math.
The class grasped this concept very quickly.
                           eg.)   6+4= 10,  10-6=4
                                    4+6=10,  10-4=6,     is a fact family.

After lunch, we started to look at expository writing.  That is, writing to persuade somebody about one side of an argument.    In our lesson we talked about whether pizza was a healthy food or not.  Some thought it was healthy, and some thought it was unhealthy.  The goal was to give an opinion and support your answer.  We then used the Smartboard to look at the structure of expository writing.   It needs a title, an opening statement of opinion, reasons and support, and finally a concluding statement.    Again the goal is to convince someone that your way of thinking is correct.

We then moved into our Literacy groups.   The yellow group read with me, the blue group completed their posters, the green group completed work in Science on the water cycle reviewing condensation, precipitation and evaporation.    The red group did grammar focusing on singular and plural nouns.   Do you add "s', "es", or "ies" to make something mean more than one?

After recess Ms. Jean looked at different foods, we sorted them into their food groups and talked about what a serving size means.

Thursday November 18 Day 2

We started the day with Gym with Mr. Costa learning how to dribble.   Afterwards we did our first lesson on the Smartboard.  We read the morning message and moved words into the correct spot.   When we finished we rolled dice and practiced quick addition.  It was actually fun rolling the virtual die.

After recess, we completed our Math activities.  We are very good at rounding and but still need more work on subtracting with regrouping.   Our adding and subtracting will get better the more we commit our number facts to 20 to memory.

After lunch we worked very hard to complete our letters to our penpals.  We decorated our letters with stickers , added a postcard from Toronto and completed our envelopes.    Emmanuel came today and read a story called, "How Are You Peeling?".    We looked at a very creative book that used vegetables and fruit faces and we learned about feelings and how to identify them.  Much to our disappointment, baby Teagan did not come in today.

After recess, we put finishing touches on our letters, postcards and any unfinished work that needed to be done this week.

Wednesday November 17 Day 1

We started the day with our temperature graphs and our Journal.  Today we talked about having opinions and learning to take a side and support it.   The question I asked students to answer was in response to what Dr. Spence our director had on twitter.   Should we pay underpriveliged students to get good grades?   I am looking for a topic sentence that states an opinion and some reasons to support your answer.

Afterwards we did our math activities.   The students have a good sense of rounding and are enjoying the activities that Ms. Jean created.   We looked at our new Math Word Wall, and added some new words and definitions to our Math Dictionaries.

After lunch we worked on our letters to our penpals.  Ms. Jean and I editted the letters and many are doing the good copy and are hoping to send them to Korea on Friday.  Once the students had their fill of letter writing we moved onto our Literacy activities.   We then read another chapter from Matilda.   After recess, we watched a Bill Nye video on the water cycle.  After creating our own diagrams and watching the video, we should all uderstand, evaporation, condensation and precipitation.

I set up the Smartboard today, and am eager to get the class using it and hopefully engage them more and inspire more use of technology.

Monday November 15 Day 4

Today we started off with the temperature graph and doing another recount of our weekend.  We made sure for focus on a topic sentence and using time words ( first, next, then, finally, etc.) and writing what happened in sequence.

Then we went to Gym with Mr. Costa.

After recess we did our Math groups.  Two groups worked with Ms. Jean on estmating and rounding and one group finished up any unfinished work and the other group worked on addition and subtraction with regrouping.

After lunch, Ms. Jean did a read aloud from "Matilda".   We then started the first draft of our penpal letters.
We then had our Lesson 9  Spelling test and began Lesson 10 words, alpha order and syllables.
After recess, Grade 2's made paper models of the water cycle, while the Grade 3's worked with Ms. Jean looking at the different types of soil that exist within one soil sample ( e.g.  sand, silt, clay, humus, gravel).

Thursday November 11 Day 2

We had a very exciting day today.   We started off with Gym and then had an early recess to allow us to have a very interesting Remembrance Day assembly.     We were lead into the gym by bagpipes and we listened to songs, poems, a play and a colonel spoke to us about who, what and why we remember on this day.

After lunch we did our literacy activities.

Then the excitement happend.   Today is the day we met "Baby Teagan"!  She arrived with her mother, Vanessa and our instructor Emmanuel.   We had some great questions for the mother and we had time to just observe the baby.   We measured her length and found her weight.  She is 14 lbs. 1 oz, and is 24 in. or 61 cm.

Welcome Vanessa and baby Teagan

After recess we did some Science.  The Grade 3's examined soil samples from around the school, and the Grade 2's learned about the water cycle and what happens to waste water.

Sorry for not posting again yesterday.  There was alot of excitement yesterday when we recieved the letters from our penpals from South Korea.  We are looking at forms of writing over the next several weeks and this is an authentic way to understand letter writing and audience.  It also integrates well into our Social Studies unit on communities around the world.

Today we completed our math activities and we are getting a good understanding of patterning, rounding and geometry, and just beginning to get an understanding of length and width with nonstandard units.

After recess we read a story about Remembrance Day and why it is important to think about the soldiers that have died and why we fight for freedom and peace.   We watched a Youtube video that had images of flanders feild and other images of World War 1 and 2.   Afterwards, we made wishes for the world on the silouette of a dove that will be posted on the walls for our assembly.

After lunch we talked about our oral presentations and Ms. Jean demonstrated what is expected by explaining the rubric and showing her 3 keepsakes.  I am interested in seeing what students bring in.
We them did our literacy activities.  We are creating posters, looking at nouns, answering questions, and working on penmanship.  I hope we can begin cursive writing soon.

HOMEWORK:  Spelling: Complete rhyming words.

Monday November 8 Day 4

Today we completed our temperature graphs and also did a Journal response on recounting our weekend.   We focused on telling things in order while keeping in mind what we learned about paragraphs, ie.  topic sentence and supporting details.   We then did our morning message.

We went to Gym.  After Gym we worked on Math activities.   We started to look at linear measurement and are using non-standard units to find length and width of our desks and notebooks.   Another group continued with rounding numbers and are now using rounding numbers to find reasonable answers to addition and subtraction questions.   In geometry we are reviewing sides, vertices and angles and classifying shapes.   The final group is working on patterning or completing unfinished work from last week.

After lunch we did independent reading, and Ms. Jean demonstrated how to write a friendly letter and identified the key parts of a letter.  The date, salutation, body and closing.
We then divided into our Literacy Groups.   We worked on answering questions based on a reading, in Grammar we looked for examples of nouns in magazines and newspapers, we did penmanship and the last group worked on another copy of a poster of an issue important to them for media literacy.  Some students began their good copy of their posters.

In the last period we had a spelling test, and began to work on Lesson 9.

Friday November 5 Day 2

I'm glad Kyral reminded me that I didn't post yesterday.  It shows me people are reading the blog.    I apoligize for not getting a posting up.

Today we had quite a busy day with a few last minute changes.   We did our morning message and also did a Journal entry about what we think we will learn from baby Teagan.   Teagan will be the baby that will visit us every week for 27 weeks with her mother as part of the Roots of Empathy program in which our class is participating. We had an introductory visit with Emmanuel our instructor yesterday.  We saw a picture of the baby and learned about empathy and temperment.

When found out that our Drama class was cancelled we continued with our Journal and also added mispelled words from our Journal into our new personal dictionaries created by Ms. Jean.   It will keep track of words we want to spell and also contains commonly mispelled words so we have it on hand for quick reference when we are writing.

We worked to complete any unfinished Math.

After lunch Ms. Jean read "The Name Jar". We predicted what it might be about and then confirmed whether our predictions were correct or not.  In addition, we also learned the importance of valuing one's name and why names are important.

After that we did an art activity.   We used three colours and a variety of media to create some abstract art.  I added a video below to show how hard everyone worked at this art activity.

Here are a few samples of the finished pieces.

Wednesday November 3 Day 1

Today we started off with completing our temperature graph, and also started with 20 minutes of Journal writing.  Today's topic was " Tell of a time when you helped someone solve a problem."  We will be doing a journal entry daily before reading our morning message.   We then did our Math activities which focused on rounding, patterning, naming and describing shapes and angles, and comparing numbers.

After recess we did a Media Literacy activity.   We were looking at posters and how they grab attention and convey messages.   We looked at several poster from around the school and found some common features.  Posters use bright colours, they have big printing, they have pictures and they share information.    We then did a rough plan of a poster we are going to make. Students got to choose something important to them they wanted others to learn about or become aware of.

After recess we did DPA  and when we returned we looked at the similarities and differences in letters.  We then did some reading and penmanship.  One group read with me, one group read with Ms. Jean and the others worked on penmanship.  After recess we switched groups.   In reading we are focusing on answering questions after reading a text.   We are learning to answer in full sentences.

Tuesday November 2 Day 5

We had another busy day in Area 203.    We had library first period and when we returned we did the temperature graph.  Afterwards we started to solve a math problem of the day.   We are looking at different ways of solving the same problem.   We also discussed using words, pictures and numbers to solve a problem.

After recess we did our Math activities.   Ms. Jean continued with rounding numbers, Gr. 3's worked on number patterns, the other groups practices describing shapes and angles, and one group worked on comparing numbers using the <,  > and = symbols.

After lunch I attended a software workshop called Read and Write Gold.  I will give the information on how you can download it at home at parent-teacher interviews, or letter will be sent.   Ms. Jean did a cooperative activity that got students to look at different kinds of letters.  Each student had a job to do in the group.   Mr. Duwyn was in the class and read a story about how water gets to where it is going.

After recess we went outside for a Social Studies/Science activity.    The Grade 2's made a map of the school yard using symbols to indicate where the playground, stairs, garden etc. were located.  The Grade 3's collected soil samples from various locations and indicated on their maps were each sample was found.

Here is Jack's Map of the schoolyard.

HOMEWORK:  Spelling.   Lesson 8.  Write a sentence for each word.

Friday October 29 Day 3

Boo!
Today we read our scary morning message and then read some not-so-scary scary poems.
We then had Drama/DPA with Ms. Leung.
After recess we completed our twigs and leaves for our "geometree."
If you look closely you will see that the twigs are in three colours and each colour is to be either an acute, right or obtuse angle.  The leaves that were added were made by combining 2D geometric shapes.

Can you see the different angles?
Can you see how the leaves were made?

After lunch was the exciting Halloween parade.   We had some great costumes.  We had zombies, witches, Harry Potter, Wendy ( from PeterPan), Mr. T,figure skaters, storm troopers, Batman, Hannah Montana, and the Grim Reaper.   We then visited the Halloween maze in Ms. Pearlman's class.

We we returned we ate some candy and did some activities and before you knew it, it was recess.    Last period we cleaned our desks had some more candy and did a word search.  It was a really fun day.
Have a great weekend and trick or treat safely.

Thursday October 28 Day 3

We started off with Gym today.

We then did our temp. graphs, read the morning message and then we did a math problem as a class.

After recess we had an assembly.  Today the assembly introduced the school to the character traits of  respect and responsibility.   Over the next couple of months we will  practice being more respectful and responsible and at the next assembly we will give certificates to students that best exemplify these traits.  In our class we started a chart that allows students to put sticky notes with messages about other students in the class that did something respectful or responsible.

After lunch we had independent reading.   Before beginning our literacy activities, we talked about answering questions.   We looked at where we find answers in a text.   Are they on the line, between the lines, or beyond the lines?
On the line: the answer can be taken word for word from what they are reading.
Between the line: the answer is found from clues in the text or words
Beyond the line: the answer is NOT in the text but comes from your own ideas and experiences

We also talked about answering in full sentences.  We will continue to practice these strategies.

Last period we watched a video on soil.  We learned how soil is made, where it is found and what are the components of soil.  We also saw what things live in soil and why they are important to us.

Wednesday October 27 Day 1

Today we were lucky to have Ms. Jean with us for half the day today. She begins a four week block on Monday.    We  did two periods of Math today and the students worked really hard.    We did four different centres.   At the end of the period we did some problem solving with base ten blocks.    The students were happy that there were so many correct answers for the numbers between the greatest and least.
e.g)  In a bin of base-ten blocks with  100s, 10s and 1s, if you could pick any four blocks what are the numbers you could get? What is the greatest number you could get?  What is the least number you could get?

After lunch, we talked about solving problems without using hitting or kicking.    We reviewed using the I message and using powerful words.   We also talked about making friends do things and threatening to NOT be someone's friend if they don't!   How would that make you feel?

Afterwards we editted our rough copies and completed the good copies of our descriptive paragraphs on a haunted house.   When ( and if ) the good copy was completed students began working on their Spelling Lesson 7 sentences.

Last period I worked with Gr. 3's to discuss urban and rural communities and how people meet their basic needs ( food, shelter, clothing) in different communities in different ways.   We read about how aboriginal people met their needs compared to how we do it now.

School pictures were handed out today.

The parent council is assembling classlists of numbers for parents. This is a great way to arrange play dates, invited friends to parties, and communicate between parents.  Please fill and return the forms sent last Thursday if you  are interested.

FYI:  Next week, we will begin our TLCP  ( teaching-learning critical pathway).  Our focus will be on writing. We will look at explanations, expositions (personal opinions) and recounts.   We will also focus on purpose and audience while exploring these different forms.   Now that we have a practice with basic descriptive paragraphs we can use the model to build on other forms of writing.

Tuesday October 26 Day 5

Today I was at an in-school workshop so we had Mrs. R as a supply teacher.     She gave the students a Math Review that looked at several of the concepts covered in math this term.   I was very pleased with how the students did.     After recess they wrote in their Journals about Halloween and what they thought about it.

In an effort to reduce the socializing and increase the amount of work getting done, I rearranged desks into a new formation.  I'm hoping this will increase focus on work.

After lunch, we finished writing our descriptive paragraphs and we tried to do some peer editting.   Students exchanged what they had written with a fellow student and listened to the suggestions they had that would improve their writing.   We also all checked to make sure we had capitals at the start of each sentence and an endmark at the end.

We then did our literacy groups.   We did penmanship, grammar ( naming and telling parts of sentences) and two groups worked on reading a story and responding to questions.

Last period we went to the library with Mr. Brutto.

Several students are sad that Angi has moved and started at a new school.  We will miss her. Good luck at your new school, Angi!

Monday October 25 Day 4

Sorry for the delayed posting.

Today Ms. Jean lead the opening activities and talked about the importance of voting and explained why the gym was closed today.    Mr. Costa took the class to the Library since Gym was closed for polling.
After recess we worked on Math activities.  We are continuing with similar strands to last week.  We are looking at number patterns in more detail this week.

After lunch, we did writing workshop.   We are still exploring descriptive paragraphs.   So we drew a haunted house in pencil.    After our sketch was complete we started our rough copy.   We started with a good topic sentence.   Our goal is to use good sentences and precise words to help readers get a better picture in their mind about what the haunted house is like.      We finished reading our novel so I asked students to do a reading response using the retell, relate, reflect guide from our response notebooks.

After recess we had our Spelling test.      We then started Lesson 7 with words from the text.

Friday October 22 Day 3

We started the day by graphing the temperature and reading the morning message.     We then listened to the story " Oliver and the Oil Spill."   We are learning about water in science and we talked about how water is not just used for drinking and washing and crops, but we use water to transport things across the ocean.  We even drill for oil in the ocean.   An oil spill effects lots of things and we learned how animals and the environment are impacted by spills.

In Math we finished up all unfinished work from the weeks activities so we can begin a new set next week.

After lunch we finished our multistep art project.   We cut out our tissue paper covered leaves.   We printed out our poetic sentences from the computer lab. in which we experimented with font.   We then assembled our mixed media artwork and displayed it in the hall.    We all had to embellish the sentence " The wind blew the leaves."  to make it more interesting.     We continued to explore line by creating a black and white background and added our leaves that looked at the warm colours of fall, while working with tissue paper and a glue and water mixture.   Look at the beautiful examples below.

We also finished reading the novel " The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane."  After being repaired Edward was in the doll shop.   Bryce came into see him, and was told not to come back and to say goodbye.   Edward met a little doll that told him no one would buy him because he was a rabbit and not a doll.  Edward didn't care.   He did not want to be purchased.    After a few months, a 100yr. old doll was placed next to him on the shelf.  She helped him understand how good things and bad things happen in our lifes and to be hopeful.  She told him to keep hope and someone will buy him.   Edward opened his heart. After many years sitting the shop, someone finally came and had interest in him.   A little girl named Maggie.  She wanted him badly.   Edward was pleased and he noticed that the mother of the girl was wearing his pocket watch as a necklace!  YES, Edward was purchased by his first owner's (Abeline) daughter.  What a happy ending to a great story.

Thursday October 21 Day 2

Today we had Gym with Mr. Costa.
We worked on our Math activities.    Tomorrow we'll make sure all activities are completed.

After lunch we worked on our Literacy activities, we then worked on completed the good copy of our descritptive paragrahs.   We read some more about Edward Tulane.   He had a dream where all the people he loved appeared.  He was dreaming about flying away.   He didn't. When he woke up, he found himself in a doll fixers shop.    Bryce dropped him there after he was broken into 21 pieces.    He could not to have him fixed so the doll maker fixed him and is going to put him for sale in his shop.

Last period we completed our Social Studies that we began yesterday.

There were several notes sent home today.  Have a good look at the important dates and opportunities for the clusters.

Wednesday October 20 Day 1

Today we graphed the temperature and then moved into our Math activities.   We had a quick lesson on growing and shrinking number patterns and discussed why we needed to learn patterning.    The geometry activity is coming along nicely.  We are gettting some interesting leaves made from combining shapes.   Most students have a good understanding of expanded form and place value.    We are focussing on subtraction.   Subtracting with regrouping is always a challenge but we are working at understanding why we need to regroup using base ten blocks.

After recess we worked on the Second Steps social skills program.  We were talking about what empathy is and why we need to understand how others feel.  We watched a video that helped us understand that both situation and facial expressions can help us see how someone is feeling. We also learned that feelings can change quickly in one situation.

After lunch we did DPA with Mr. Brutto. when we came back to class we worked on our Literacy activities.
We are using information books to find answers to our Science questions on water, air and soil.    We are learning that good sentences need a naming and telling part and we also answered questions after reading a story.

In the final period we looked and what clues can help us decide whether a place is urban or rural by looking at a variety of images.   The Grade 3's illustrated urban and rural images to show their understanding, while the Grade 2's worked with me on comparing Canada to other countries.   We read a short book and worked together to fill in a web that organizes information. Later each student will do that for a different country.

Tuesday October 19 Day 5

We started our day off in the library with Mr. Brutto. Those students who remembered their books were able to exchange their books for new ones.

Ms. Jean did the morning message and we read a couple chapters of our novel.   After Edward became a scarecrow and was stolen by Bryce to give to his sick sister, we hear that his sister was very ill and died.  Her father took Sara Ruth away and Bryce very upset by this has ran away from home with Edward aka Jangles.   They went to Memphis where they were busking for money to buy some food.  They get some money, and go to a diner.  When Bryce gets the bill he does not have enough money to pay for what he ate.  The owner is furious and takes Edward and smashes his head against the counter.   Everything went dark.

After recess we did our Math activities.  The students worked very hard today.

After lunch we did some paragraph writing, describing what we were wearing today.   Some continued to use the hamburger organizer and some were able to organize their ideas without it.     We were looking at using descriptive words to describe things, while  have a topic sentence and closing sentence.

We then did our Literacy activities.    Last period we watched a video about what makes a community and what are the similarities and differences in communities.  The video explained the difference between urban, rural and suburban and the how towns and villages are different.

Monday October 18 Day 4

Today Ms. Jean  started in our class.  She will be with us all of November.  She is from OISE.  She worked for several years teaching in Korea and India.   She taught a range of ages from Kindergarten to High School.  We are very lucky to have another adult in our class.

We went to Gym with Mr. Costa.     In Math we worked on patterning using a 100's chart, in Geometry we created leaves using geometric shapes to attach to the angles we made last week.   We continued to work on expanded form, and the last group worked on subtraction using base ten blocks, if needed.

After lunch the children wrote to Ms. Jean about themselves and their preferred learning styles.  Each student wrote about their favourite and least favourite subjects, whether they prefer learning alone or in groups, and also  how they like to learn.  Do they learn best by reading,  doing,  making , or watching videos?   It will help both of us program effectively for each student.  We did our Literacy activities.  In Grammar we looked at the naming and telling parts of sentences ( also know as subject and predicate), one group worked on penmenship, others continued to find answers to questions they have on the science topics ( today was soil) and one group read with me and answered questions based on their reading.

We had a spelling test, and we had new words for lesson 6.  I chose theme words from Science and Social Studies since the words in the text were review.   The words we have are  air, water, soil, pollution, living, people, urban, rural, community, store, park, home, map.   We copied them down and did alpha- order and syllables during  class time.

Friday October 15 Day 2

I apologize for not posting yesterday.    We had an exciting day today.   We started the day with Math activities.  Every group completed an activity in each strand and will continue work on similar activities next week.

We rehearsed our compositions for one period and then we performed our pieces to several Grade 1, 2 and 3 classes.  It all came together and the students were very excited to present their compositions inspired by poems.

After lunch we completed our Literacy activities  and then went to the computer lab. where we used Word to type a sentence we will use in future art activities.   In this activity we learned how to change font, font size and use spellcheck.   We then saved our work to our individual files.  Stay tuned for the artwork that this will go with.

Last period we finished work, copied our weekend homework, and had "Open Mic".   Jasper, Kyral, Thanasi  had some really funny  knock, knock jokes, and Olivia and Samantha performed and hand clapping game with a chant.

We are looking forward to hosting a pre-service teacher from OISE on Monday.  Ms. Jean Jennifer will be with us for three days in October and four weeks in November.
