Today with read the morning message, did our spelling corrections and completed our temperature graphs.
We went to see a puppet performance called " O if for Ogre". The puppets were interesting and the students had some great questions for the puppeteers.
After recess we did some work with centimetres. We estimated and measured lines and objects. Everyone has a good understanding of how to measure things with a ruler, but we need to practice being accurate in placing the ruler at 0.
After lunch we read two chapters from Matilda. Matilda is getting revenge on her mean parents in variety of ways. She hid a parrot in the fireplace to make them think they had ghosts, and she amazed her father with her arithmetic ability so much that her father got angry.
We then worked really hard in trying to complete our expository paragraphs. Most students completed their work, and only a couple are left to be completed.
After recess we did some science. Gr. 2's did some experiments with moving air. We need air to breath, but we discussed how we use air for other things. We then explored how we can use our own air to move things. Students had to predict many breaths it would take to move five different objects about 4m. We moved ping pong balls, marbles, crumpled paper, flat paper and a linking cube. We then tested whether our predictions matched what we expected. We recorded our observations in a table. Later we will explain why some things were harder to move than others, and why some students could move objects easier than others. What are the variables? the Gr. 3's did detailed lablelled diagrams of the soil samples they created. Now that the soil and water mixture has settled, there are definate layers in our jars. We will explain why the layers contain the types of soil they do.

Monday November 29 Day 3
We did our temperature graphs and read the morning message. We reviewed some measurement terms and talked about measuring things using a ruler... always starting at zero. We also looked at millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres and talked about how are system is based on the number 10. We will keep talking about this.
After recess we traced our hands and practiced making measurements of the length and width of our fingers and hands. When does it make sense to use mm and when do we use cm?
After lunch we worked at completing our expository paragraphs. We are putting our ideas from our organizer onto lined paper and will start editting. Many students are not happy with rewriting something more than once. I will continue to stress the importance of revising and editting written work.
We then completed our Literacy Activities and read another chapter from Matilda.
After recess, we completed our spelling test and began Lesson 12 which is a review lesson.

Friday November 26 Day 2
We started our day off in the Gym with Mr. Costa.
After gym we read the morning message on the whtiteboard, looked for nouns and then did a review of expository writing. We then went to our desks and added supporting details to our opinions.
After recess we had a pop quiz on rounding, congruent shapes and fact families. It was also Ms. Jeans first quiz for the class.
After lunch we did Marth. Yes, Math + Art = Marth. We reviewed several concepts in geometry ( angles, lines, parallel lines, arcs, circles etc.) by looking at the work of Wasily Kandinsky, the abstract artist. Below you can see Kandinsky's art, Jack painting his work, and Kyral in video explaining our art.
After recess we had a farewell party for Ms. Jean. We will really miss her. We know she will be a great teacher and we wish her luck in her next placement. Our letters our sent and the students in Korea are eagerly waiting for them. We can expect our letters back early in the new year.

Thursday November 25 Day 1
Today we did our temperature graphs and then did our final round of activities on fact families and congruent shapes. After recess, we added some information and labels to the meals we created yesterday.
After lunch we went to Mr. Brutto for DPA. When we came back we did some media literacy activities looking at the movie trailer for Matilda, which is based on the book we are reading in class. We watched the video without sound, we listened to the trailer without images and when we watched it together we talked about what made the trailer interesting. We also talked about editting and how that can grab our attention. In the 2min and 18s clip we counted over 100 edits.
Emmanuel came to the class to do our work for Roots of Empathy. We talked about why babies cry and how you can soothe a baby. Some students practiced holding a baby doll in the correct way to help pacify a crying baby. We also talked about temperment and mood and how babies can have different temperments and moods just like we do.
After recess we did our literacy activities.
HOMEWORK: Reading Response. Use one sentence starter from each section. Add two more sentences for additional detail. Goal: 9 sentences or more!

Wednesday November 24 Day 5
We began our day with a visit to the library. While there we did a book exchange and also made good-bye cards for Ms. Jean. She only has two more days left.
When we returned to the class we did our temperature graphs, correctly spelled our mistakes from the Spelling test and also worked on penmenship.
After recess we did some review of congruency and fact families.
After lunch we started to work on our expository writing. The students were given a graphic organizer to help them organize their ideas. Students had a choice of what to write about and agree or disagree with that statement.
1) Students should be in bed before 8pm.
2) Students should wear uniforms to school. or
3) Area 203 needs to improve their learning skills.
Each student was asked to make a title, a then write their opinion statement. After that, we came up with our first reason to support our opinion. Tomorrow we will work on supporting details, and start reason 2.
We then did a healthy eating activity. Ms. Jean directed the students to create a healthy meal using food flyers, magazines etc. and think about proper servings and eating from food groups. After recess, we worked in our Literacy groups. Grade 3's did a soil experiment and will complete it tomorrow.

Monday November 22 and Tuesday November 23 Day 3 and Day 4
I was absent yesterday but Ms. Jean said things went well and things were accomplished. I saw the work that was completed on congruent vs. similar shapes. Congruent means equal or same size and shape, while similar means same shape. Ms. Jean started a series of lessons on healthy food choices and using the Canada Food Guide. The students completed a spelling test for Lesson 10 and began work on Lesson 11.
Today was busy and we noticed early in the day with our temperature graphs that there was a very large difference between the high and low temperatures. After we did the temperature, the students were asked to complete the Journal entry they started on Monday. They had the choice to write about :
a) What did they learn from their parents after the interview ?
b) How could Mr. Singbeil change the class to make it better?
After recess, Ms. Jean taught the class about fact families in Math.
The class grasped this concept very quickly.
eg.) 6+4= 10, 10-6=4
4+6=10, 10-4=6, is a fact family.
After lunch, we started to look at expository writing. That is, writing to persuade somebody about one side of an argument. In our lesson we talked about whether pizza was a healthy food or not. Some thought it was healthy, and some thought it was unhealthy. The goal was to give an opinion and support your answer. We then used the Smartboard to look at the structure of expository writing. It needs a title, an opening statement of opinion, reasons and support, and finally a concluding statement. Again the goal is to convince someone that your way of thinking is correct.
We then moved into our Literacy groups. The yellow group read with me, the blue group completed their posters, the green group completed work in Science on the water cycle reviewing condensation, precipitation and evaporation. The red group did grammar focusing on singular and plural nouns. Do you add "s', "es", or "ies" to make something mean more than one?
After recess Ms. Jean looked at different foods, we sorted them into their food groups and talked about what a serving size means.

Thursday November 18 Day 2
We started the day with Gym with Mr. Costa learning how to dribble. Afterwards we did our first lesson on the Smartboard. We read the morning message and moved words into the correct spot. When we finished we rolled dice and practiced quick addition. It was actually fun rolling the virtual die.
After recess, we completed our Math activities. We are very good at rounding and but still need more work on subtracting with regrouping. Our adding and subtracting will get better the more we commit our number facts to 20 to memory.
After lunch we worked very hard to complete our letters to our penpals. We decorated our letters with stickers , added a postcard from Toronto and completed our envelopes. Emmanuel came today and read a story called, "How Are You Peeling?". We looked at a very creative book that used vegetables and fruit faces and we learned about feelings and how to identify them. Much to our disappointment, baby Teagan did not come in today.
After recess, we put finishing touches on our letters, postcards and any unfinished work that needed to be done this week.

Wednesday November 17 Day 1
We started the day with our temperature graphs and our Journal. Today we talked about having opinions and learning to take a side and support it. The question I asked students to answer was in response to what Dr. Spence our director had on twitter. Should we pay underpriveliged students to get good grades? I am looking for a topic sentence that states an opinion and some reasons to support your answer.
Afterwards we did our math activities. The students have a good sense of rounding and are enjoying the activities that Ms. Jean created. We looked at our new Math Word Wall, and added some new words and definitions to our Math Dictionaries.
After lunch we worked on our letters to our penpals. Ms. Jean and I editted the letters and many are doing the good copy and are hoping to send them to Korea on Friday. Once the students had their fill of letter writing we moved onto our Literacy activities. We then read another chapter from Matilda. After recess, we watched a Bill Nye video on the water cycle. After creating our own diagrams and watching the video, we should all uderstand, evaporation, condensation and precipitation.
I set up the Smartboard today, and am eager to get the class using it and hopefully engage them more and inspire more use of technology.

Thursday November 11 Day 2
We had a very exciting day today. We started off with Gym and then had an early recess to allow us to have a very interesting Remembrance Day assembly. We were lead into the gym by bagpipes and we listened to songs, poems, a play and a colonel spoke to us about who, what and why we remember on this day.
After lunch we did our literacy activities.
Then the excitement happend. Today is the day we met "Baby Teagan"! She arrived with her mother, Vanessa and our instructor Emmanuel. We had some great questions for the mother and we had time to just observe the baby. We measured her length and found her weight. She is 14 lbs. 1 oz, and is 24 in. or 61 cm.
After recess we did some Science. The Grade 3's examined soil samples from around the school, and the Grade 2's learned about the water cycle and what happens to waste water.

Wednesday November 10 Day 1
Sorry for not posting again yesterday. There was alot of excitement yesterday when we recieved the letters from our penpals from South Korea. We are looking at forms of writing over the next several weeks and this is an authentic way to understand letter writing and audience. It also integrates well into our Social Studies unit on communities around the world.
Today we completed our math activities and we are getting a good understanding of patterning, rounding and geometry, and just beginning to get an understanding of length and width with nonstandard units.
After recess we read a story about Remembrance Day and why it is important to think about the soldiers that have died and why we fight for freedom and peace. We watched a Youtube video that had images of flanders feild and other images of World War 1 and 2. Afterwards, we made wishes for the world on the silouette of a dove that will be posted on the walls for our assembly.
After lunch we talked about our oral presentations and Ms. Jean demonstrated what is expected by explaining the rubric and showing her 3 keepsakes. I am interested in seeing what students bring in.
We them did our literacy activities. We are creating posters, looking at nouns, answering questions, and working on penmanship. I hope we can begin cursive writing soon.

Monday November 8 Day 4
Today we completed our temperature graphs and also did a Journal response on recounting our weekend. We focused on telling things in order while keeping in mind what we learned about paragraphs, ie. topic sentence and supporting details. We then did our morning message.
We went to Gym. After Gym we worked on Math activities. We started to look at linear measurement and are using non-standard units to find length and width of our desks and notebooks. Another group continued with rounding numbers and are now using rounding numbers to find reasonable answers to addition and subtraction questions. In geometry we are reviewing sides, vertices and angles and classifying shapes. The final group is working on patterning or completing unfinished work from last week.
After lunch we did independent reading, and Ms. Jean demonstrated how to write a friendly letter and identified the key parts of a letter. The date, salutation, body and closing.
We then divided into our Literacy Groups. We worked on answering questions based on a reading, in Grammar we looked for examples of nouns in magazines and newspapers, we did penmanship and the last group worked on another copy of a poster of an issue important to them for media literacy. Some students began their good copy of their posters.
In the last period we had a spelling test, and began to work on Lesson 9.

Friday November 5 Day 2
I'm glad Kyral reminded me that I didn't post yesterday. It shows me people are reading the blog. I apoligize for not getting a posting up.
Today we had quite a busy day with a few last minute changes. We did our morning message and also did a Journal entry about what we think we will learn from baby Teagan. Teagan will be the baby that will visit us every week for 27 weeks with her mother as part of the Roots of Empathy program in which our class is participating. We had an introductory visit with Emmanuel our instructor yesterday. We saw a picture of the baby and learned about empathy and temperment.
When found out that our Drama class was cancelled we continued with our Journal and also added mispelled words from our Journal into our new personal dictionaries created by Ms. Jean. It will keep track of words we want to spell and also contains commonly mispelled words so we have it on hand for quick reference when we are writing.
We worked to complete any unfinished Math.
After lunch Ms. Jean read "The Name Jar". We predicted what it might be about and then confirmed whether our predictions were correct or not. In addition, we also learned the importance of valuing one's name and why names are important.
After that we did an art activity. We used three colours and a variety of media to create some abstract art. I added a video below to show how hard everyone worked at this art activity.

Wednesday November 3 Day 1
Today we started off with completing our temperature graph, and also started with 20 minutes of Journal writing. Today's topic was " Tell of a time when you helped someone solve a problem." We will be doing a journal entry daily before reading our morning message. We then did our Math activities which focused on rounding, patterning, naming and describing shapes and angles, and comparing numbers.
After recess we did a Media Literacy activity. We were looking at posters and how they grab attention and convey messages. We looked at several poster from around the school and found some common features. Posters use bright colours, they have big printing, they have pictures and they share information. We then did a rough plan of a poster we are going to make. Students got to choose something important to them they wanted others to learn about or become aware of.
After recess we did DPA and when we returned we looked at the similarities and differences in letters. We then did some reading and penmanship. One group read with me, one group read with Ms. Jean and the others worked on penmanship. After recess we switched groups. In reading we are focusing on answering questions after reading a text. We are learning to answer in full sentences.

Tuesday November 2 Day 5
We had another busy day in Area 203. We had library first period and when we returned we did the temperature graph. Afterwards we started to solve a math problem of the day. We are looking at different ways of solving the same problem. We also discussed using words, pictures and numbers to solve a problem.
After recess we did our Math activities. Ms. Jean continued with rounding numbers, Gr. 3's worked on number patterns, the other groups practices describing shapes and angles, and one group worked on comparing numbers using the <, > and = symbols.
After lunch I attended a software workshop called Read and Write Gold. I will give the information on how you can download it at home at parent-teacher interviews, or letter will be sent. Ms. Jean did a cooperative activity that got students to look at different kinds of letters. Each student had a job to do in the group. Mr. Duwyn was in the class and read a story about how water gets to where it is going.
After recess we went outside for a Social Studies/Science activity. The Grade 2's made a map of the school yard using symbols to indicate where the playground, stairs, garden etc. were located. The Grade 3's collected soil samples from various locations and indicated on their maps were each sample was found.
HOMEWORK: Spelling. Lesson 8. Write a sentence for each word.
( We did not have time to do this in class so if they are not complete they may
get time to finish tomorrow.)
