We started our day with the morning message. We then reviewed some math from earlier on the year. I was impressed by how much students remembered. Then we went to Drama with Ms. leung. After recess we did our Math activities.
When we came in from lunch we worked hard to get the final copies of our stories published. We have one hand written story and one being done on computer. After we left the computer lab we worked on penmanship or spelling. After recess we did science. Grade 3 tried to build card castles that could support a heavy cube. We are exploring structures so it was interesting to see how students used to cards to succeed in building a strong stable structure with a deck of thin cards. Grade 2's watched a video on the different states of matter .
Please excuse errors I did this from my phone.

Wednesday March 30 Day 2
Today we started off in the Gym.
When we returned we graphed the temperature and we wrote in our Journals. Today the topic was "What makes a happy family?" We reviewed opinion writing, and today I told the students that I will be marking their work looking specifically at supporting details. So even if other parts were missing and there were spellilng mistakes, I was really focussing on them explaining their ideas in detail. We talked about all the different forms a family could take. We have been talking about using the words generally and specifically in class. Today I wanted them to write about families in general and not specifically about their family, though they could tell all the great things that make their family happy as inspiration.
After recess we did our Math activities. We looked at fractions, symmetry, money and time. We will be having a quiz on these strands in the coming week.
After lunch, we talked about how we can respond to a text. In our new pathway we are focussing on comprehension of what we read, and we are looking at how we feel after we read a text and what connections we make. For Grade 2, our goal is to make connections that are similar to the feelings we have after we read a text. For Grade 3 ( and 2's if ready) our goal is to find the main idea of a text, tell how we feel about that, and then make connections to the main idea of the story. This is a bit more challenging, but many students are able to get the main idea. The connections can be to self, another text, or to the world.
We then did penmanship and grammar work. The grammar work focused on verb aggreement when writing sentences.
After recess, this afternoon we learned about different kinds of shots you can take with a camera. We learned that the outside edge of a picture is called the frame. We learned that there are different shots within the frame. Specifically we learned the macro shot, close-up, mid-shot, and wide angle. We then learned the buttons on the camera. We then worked with the cameras in pairs and our goal was to get an example of each shot with our partners. The students had fun. Next time, I will stress the importance of holding the camera still. When we reviewed the images many were blurry. We'll get better, I know it.

Tuesday March 29 Day 1
Today was a busy day. We started off the morning by reading a very challenging message. We were learning to figure out what words mean by where they are in the sentence. We also practiced defining what words mean without using that word. We did a short lesson on mixed numbers. eg. 2 1/2 or 5/2. We combined fractions to make wholes and leftover pieces.
We then moved into our Math activity groups. One group did mixed fractions, one group looked at fractions of a set.. eg.) 1/3 of 9 = 3, one group did activity cards reviewing money and the final group did activity cards review.
After recess this morning, we started looking at commercials. We talked about how long commercials are, we talked about who they are made for and we talked about how they grab people's attention. Sometimes they use jingles ( eg. " Do the potty dance!") they use cartoons to get children's attention, and sometimes use famous people to endorse their products. We will hopefully be making our own commercials using Health and Safety as a focus.
After lunch we went to DPA to get some much needed exercise. When we came back talked about "success criteria" for our narratives. I told them what teachers expected in a good story and then we worked as a class to come up with what it would look like in their writing. This will help students assess their own work more successfully. We then worked on completing our good copies of our stories where we used a picture as inspiration.
After recess, those still not complete worked to get that done while those finished were able to work on their Spelling Lesson 25.

Friday March 25 Day 4
Today we did our usual routine of graphing the temperature and reading the morning message. Today during the message we focused on reading a paragraph and finding the main idea. We also talked about inferring. We talked about how you can figure things out without having to be told them. This is a difficult concept to grasp in reading, so we started by talking about expressions, and how you can tell how someone feels by looking at them and their actions.
We went to Gym before recess and played badminton.
After recess, we did some more work on fractions. We looked at naming fractions, and we started to compare fractions... what is a larger fraction of a shape... a 1/2 or 1/6?
After lunch we did art and also integrated our math and science into the activity. We folded a large piece of paper to make 32 equal rectangles. That means we folded it in half five times. Afterwards we used watercolour cakes to paint our squares. We talked about how the paint is solid, the water is liquid and how the water can change the paint to a liquid. In the art activity every box had to be painted and had to be surrounded by a different colour.
We observed EARTH HOUR today. We turned off the lights, we turned of computers and anything that consumed electricity. Students had free time play without using paper or electricity.
After recess more lights were off and it was quite dark. The students were able to keep themselves busy with cooperative games, drawing on the chalkboard and using building materials.

Wednesday March 23 Day 2
We started off this snowy day in the Gym.
When we returned, we read and editted the morning message and with the remaining time we did Spelling. If it was not completed the students have this for homework. They had an hour and twenty-five minutes of classtime to complete this.
After recess we did some work with fractions. We looked at fractions and we drew different ways to show half, fourths and thirds when dividing a square.
After recess we had a long period of writing. It was a productive period and many enjoyed writing a story in this way. We reread the story "Red Parka Mary" and we practiced making the connections to the main idea instead of anything they wanted. In this case it was about judging people before getting to know them.
After recess we made Science Folders. Grade 2's made folder for Solids and Liquids and Grade 3's made a folder for Structures. We will see how doing seperate units in Science works. We will do similar activities but the content will be very different.
HOMEWORK: Spelling if incomplete.
Science sheet: Find 10 examples of liquids you have at home, 10 solids
Find 10 structures you have at home, ( something that is made of different
parts that serves a specific purpose)

Tuesday March 22 Day 1
Today we started off by graphing our daily high and low temperatures and then moved onto the carpet to read the morning message. I was full of errors and missing words and we worked together to make it easier to read.
We then started to look at fractions. We talked about fractions being part of a whole thing or a group of things. We talked about sharing one thing fairly and how when you share one thing between people, the more people the smaller the pieces each person gets. I told them that the pieces needed to be equal in size. We used examples of pizza, pie, lasagna, apples, chocolate bars etc. to show how one thing can be shared.
We learned the terms whole, half, thirds, quarters/fourths, etc. I introduced the terms of numerator and denominator. We also learned how to write fractions in proper notation. We then worked on a worksheet that reinforced the concepts. Tomorrow we will look at fractions as part of a group or set of objects. At the end of the period we wrote examples of halves, thirds and quarters in our notebooks.
After recess we went to the computer to get our first stories entered into the computers. This is taking a very long time. Many students are interested in changing the font colours and sizes more than inputting their stories.... oh well, its all learning.
After recess we had DPA and when we returned we worked on Spelling Lesson 24 for 30 min. Emmanuel came today to talk about milestones, mini-milestones, and how to keep a baby safe. We talked about why when a baby has learned to crawl should we not have small objects on the floor. We also talked about healthy eating, smoking and drinking alcohol when a mother is pregnant. It all effects the unborn baby.
After recess, we did writing workshop. Children had to choose an image from six given. That picture was to be the middle of the story. From the image students wrote what happened before and what happened after the picture was taken. The students were into this activity and most were interested in the dog with the cast.

Monday March 21 Day 5
Today we started off the day in the Library with Mr. Brutto.
When we returned to class we wrote in our Journals. We had the choice of writing a recount of our March Break, an expository paragraph on Spring ( do you like it or not?) or an explanatory paragraph on how to keep busy on a rainy day. We reviewed each form and reviewed what needed to be included in each form.
After recess we did math. We reviewed telling time. Grade 2's looked at telling time the hour, half past, quarter past and quarter to on both digital and analog clocks. Grade 3's were looking at elapsed time.
After lunch we did a reading response to the story Red Parka Mary. We are starting to look at the main idea or big idea in a story. What is the author's message that we should learn? We focused on connections and feeling during the story. Then we talked about making connections to the big idea. This is high order thinking and is more challenging than simply retelling a story. Students wrote a response stating what they thought the big idea was, and what connections they had after listening to it. In this story, the big idea was not judging people or how your feelings can change once you get to know someone. In this story a boys feelings change from being scared of an elderly lady to loving the elderly lady.
After we completed that as best we could we worked on the Math activity from the morning as a class.
After recess we did our Spelling test and worked on our Spelling Lesson 24.

Wednesday March 9 Day 2
We started the day off with Phys. Ed. with Mr. Costa.
When we returned to class we graphed the weather and temperature and then we continued to finish up activities from last week. We prioritized what needed to be done. Today the Gr. 2's had to complete changing a bar graph to a picto-graph. The Gr. 3's worked on an activity that focused on elapsed time.
After recess, we did a well needed review on regroup 10's to 1's and 100's to 10's. Subtraction is something that the students struggle with more than addition so we stepped back a bit to review the basics, review what regrouping means and also look at the pattern in the steps to regrouping.
After recess we did 20 min of independent reading and several students read to me or the resource teacher assisting that period. After that we tried to do a challenging art activity. We looked at foreground, middleground and background. We learned how we can make objects seem close or far away by either overlapping them, or by using perspective ( far things are small.. close things are big). This was challenging but really demonstrated how listening skills need to improve to follow instructions.
After recess, we talked about the play that we are going to see on Friday morning. Forms have been sent home and need to be returned asap. It is called "Head a Tete." It is about conflict resolution between people who don't speak the same language. It will be interesting to hear the critiques of the play. We talked about who is involved in creating plays. There is the playwright, the cast, director, stage manager, set , sound and costume people. We talked about proper theatre behaviour because it is different than a movie because actors can hear the audience. There was a few minutes at the end of the day to work on Spelling but not nearly enough since it took almost 25 min. to settle after recess before we could talk as a class.

Tuesday March 8 Day 1
Today we started the day off by talking about International Women's Day and why it is important to think about it not just in Canada but around the world. We talked about how the rights of women have changed and how boys and girls are fairly equal in Canada. We then talked about how some girls and women in other countries have limited rights. There was also another article in the paper about childhood obesity and health. We talked about the importance of exercise and eating healthy when you have the choice. So for their journals they were asked to write a few sentences in response to one of the two topics.
We then started to work on word problems and looking for key words to tell us if we need to add or subtract. Afterwards we reviewed addition and subtraction of two-digit numbers with and without regrouping.
After lunch we had DPA in the library. When we returned to class we grabbed the rough copies of our stories and we began to enter them into the computer using Word and also using the software Read and Write Gold to help us enter our words correctly and also to hear back what we have typed to hear if it makes sense and sounds right. Those students who forgot their stories or who already completed it on the computer began another story.
After recess we worked in Literacy groups. One group read with me, one group completed a sheet on contractions and two groups had time to work on Spelling lesson 23.
NOTICE: We just got word that the whole class will see the play at Wychwood Barn as a group on Friday morning. The fieldtrip form will be sent home tomorrow. This is a free trip!!
Our video "Jazz Jazz 2011 will be shown at 1:00pm during the assembly.

Monday March 7 Day 5
We started the day off in the Library with Mr. Brutto. When we returned to class we graphed the temperature and then completed our Spelling Test for Lesson 22. Afterwards we did some writing explaining how to draw an analog clock showing a specific time. This is a review of the explanatory writing we did several weeks ago.
After recess, we had some unfinished work from last week that needed to be completed and corrections that had to be made in several strands of Math.
After lunch we read the story, "Baseball Saved Us", by Ken Mochizuki. Since we are writing stories focussing on story elements it is good to read stories and break them down into these elements. Also, in reading activities we are focusing on big ideas and connections. This story has a very important big idea. It is telling us not to judge someone based on his/her race. This story was set in the USA in 1942 when the Japanese were sent to internment camps. The story looks at a young Japanese boy before, during and after being at the camp and how baseball helped the children see past racial boundaries.
We then completed our Literacy activites. One group read a story "Ruby's Storm" and looked at story elements and connections, on group worked on contractions, on group began their spelling lesson and the final group completed their penmanship.
Last period we read a non-fiction book call "Forces Make Things Move". We reviewed some ideas we already know like friction and gravitiy and today we talked about balanced and unbalanced forces and how they make things move or stop. In the middle of the lesson we had a lockdown practice. So the worksheet we were going to complete in class was sent home.

Thursday March 3 Day 3
We started of the day by graphing the temperature and then we did cooperative Math activity with money. Each student had a job as an accountant, banker, cashier or presenter. Students sorted and counted coins, and they also sorted and counted bills. It was a great way to review counting my 1's, 5's 10's 20's 25's etc.
The students also used calculators to assist in finding total amounts of dollars and cents.
The class went to Drama with Ms. Leung before recess and were working on scripts for some plays they will be presenting next week.
After recess we did our Math activities. We read graphs, told time quarter to the hour and then the Gr. 3's began to count elapsed time. (e.g. How much time passed from 3:30 to 6:50?) The other groups counted faces, edges and vertices of shapes and the final group played money games on the computer.
After recess we read the story " Steel Pan Man of Harlem". We reviewed the elements of the story as a class and discussed the big idea... in this story it was to keep the promises you make. We then individually made text-to-text and text-to-self connections, with the text-to-world connection being that it is a good idea to keep the promises you make.
Baby Teagan came to visit today. We were very surprised to see how active she was today. She was very happy and was bouncing the whole time. She was making more noises and we also learned that she is getting her first tooth. We talked about the emotions she has, and what makes her feel certain ways at certain times and how her mother can identify these feelings in Teagan.
After recess, I collected Spelling books and several students had not completed their work, so many did spelling and those finished worked on the rough draft of their stories.

Wednesday March 2 Day 2
We started off our day in the gym with Mr. Costa.
When we returned to class, we got into our Math activities quickly. One group played a money game on the computer, one group interpreted graphs, one group reviewed 3D shapes and the final group practiced telling time ( a quarter to the hour or __: 45). After recess we different groups did the similar activities.
After lunch, it was another one of those days where getting ourselves settled down to learn took a bit of time. Once we were settled we began to complete the rough copy of our stories. I may send them home this weekend if they are not complete so we can start to edit and revise the work. We worked on our writing for a good 30 min and then we began a Media Literacy activity. Using illustrations from a Duke Ellington book from the library as inspiration, we designed a DVD box for our Jazz Jazz 2011 video which will be premiered on March 10 at 1:00pm at the recognition assembly. I will also post it here on the blog for viewing.
When we returned from recess, it took another long while to get settled in. We did Spelling Lesson 22 and it needs to be handed in tomorrow for marking.
