Monday January 31 Day 2

We began the day with Gym and Mr. Costa had the class do extra lining up practice.
When we got back to class, we  read the morning message and since only 3 students completed their Journal homework on the weekend, we completed before going to recess.

After recess we continued to look at Data Management.   Instead of looking at tally sheets and graphs and getting information, we talked about surveys and why people take them.    After discussing surveys  the students were given a worksheet on asking survey questions.  The questions and choices given were for a specific group of people, ie.) kindergarten children, grown-ups etc.

After Lunch it took us a very long time to get settled.  Once we were ready to learn we talked about Simple Machines, and Forces.   We reviewed the six simple machines ( levers, pulley, wedge, screw, inclined plane, and wheel and axel).   We then talked about how they help us over some forces.     We then reviewed the different kinds of forces ( gravity, friction and muscular).    We watched some videos on Youtube that looked at different sports.  We  talked about how in many sports you are fighting forces.   Some are helpful and some are not.   We looked at some simple machines in sports ( i.e.) bat=lever, skates=wedges , ski jump= inclined plane, diving board= lever).  We also looked at where friction was helpful or not.
We then completed a worksheet that helped us sort simple machines.

After recess, we completed our Lesson 18 Spelling test, and we began our Lesson 19 unit.

Thursday January 27 Day 5

We started the day off in the Library with Mr. Brutto.   Mr. Brutto discussed with the class how to choose a book at their level.  He reminded them of the 5 word rule.  Read a page and if there are five or more words on one page that can't read then it may be too challenging for you.

We returned to class and did the morning message which was full of spelling mistakes. On a sheet of paper the children were asked to fix the spelling of the 12 words that were spelled incorrectly.   After that we did a speed drill in number facts to 10.   We tried to complete the second half of the sheet from yesterday.  In a minute and a half do have the sheet of adding. and then flip and do a minute and a half of subtracting.   The questions that were not completed or incorrect were sent home for homework.   We then used pattern blocks to do some work on area and covering space with non standard units (eg.  triangles).  How many triangles cover a hexagon?

After recess we did our Math activities which included graphing from a tally, adding two-digit numbers without regrouping, finding area of  shapes in square units, and building a box from one sheet of construction paper.

Here is Area 203's collection of boxes. Each student constructed a rectangular prism from a single piece of construction paper and masking tape.  They had to combine a lot of skill and patience to construct boxes.  They now have to decide what kind of product their box might be good for.  Stay tuned to see what creative ideas are made.

After lunch we did our Literacy activities.  We worked on adjectives, written retelling, penmanship and science sheets.    Baby Teagan came in for a visit.   She has grown a lot since Dec. 2, 2010 and she was in a very good mood.  It was exciting to see her spit and drool too.     After her brief visit we read from the new novel we are reading " Tales of Despereaux."   We are introduced to Despereaux, and the fact he is not like other mice.

Last period we worked on finalizing our plans for our community maps which we will begin soon.

Wednesday January 26 Day 4

Today we started with the morning message without punctuation.   The students wrote their answers on a sheet of paper as we read the message.      We talked about doing what is asked by a teacher,( unless it is unreasonable) without arguing or talking back.   I also asked for students to make suggestions to their classmates to make improvements.    I then gave the class a quick Math skills sheet.  They had 1.5 min. to complete as many addition questions as they could , and another 1.5 min to complete some subtraction questions.     This is something that could be reviewed at home ( adding/subtracting to 10).    We then lined up for Gym with Mr. Costa.

After recess we did our Math activites,  graphing, geometry ( box building), area, and adding and subtracting.

After lunch we started off by doing our literacy activities.  One group worked with Ms. Jean on retelling a story in writing, another worked on adjectives, one group did penmanship, and the final group completed their force and friction sheet.      We then worked hard to finish our penpal letters.     We did the final copy, added stickers, drew pictures, and addressed the envelopes.  Hopefully we can send them off next week, as a few students are still working on their rough copy.

After recess, we plugged away at completing the letters, and those completed were encouraged to get a head start on the Spelling homework for tonight, as it is due tomorrow.

Tuesday January 25 Day 3

Today we did the morning message and we filled in missing words from the morning message.  We also reviewed area and perimeter, and tried to identify a 3d solid by looking at the faces of a shape before it is assembled.

We then had Drama/DPA with Ms. Leung.   It was warm enough today for a full length recess!

After recess, we did our Math activities.   Children created boxes, solved multiplication and division problems, some found the area of  cut out shapes, and the Gr. 3's looked at pictographs that had a scale that meant more than one.

After lunch we went to the computer lab.   We started off by working on some keyboarding skills.    We ended the period early as it was very loud and numerous interruptions made it difficult to teach the next lesson so we returned to class and will try again another day.

We worked on our Literacy activities.   One group looked at adjectives used to describe nouns.   One group worked with me retelling a story, one group completed their science sheet on forces and one group did penmanship.

Last period we started an activity that will review what we learned in Soc. Studies.  In pairs, or alone students are going to make a map of an invented city/town.   They are to use legend to show what is shown on their maps.  Their maps are to include places for people to live, ,work, play and industry.   It should also  include things that we need in a community ( schools, hospitals, parks,  banks etc.).  Today we chose partners ( or not) and did a rough copy so that negotiating happened before the good copy was attempted.

Monday January 24 Day 2

We started the day off with Gym.     When we returned to class, we graphed our cccold temperatures ( brrr) and then did a Journal entry.  The topic was " What would you do if you saw your friend stealing candy from the store?"    We focused on indenting, topic sentences and explaining ourselves clearly.

After recess, we did Math activities.    I introduced the idea of area today.   We talked that it meant the amount of space something takes up, and how it is different than perimeter.   We also talked that we usually measure it in square units.    Not an easy concept, but we will work on it more.   One group did numeracy skills, one group did an area activity, one group finished constructing their boxes and explained what their boxes would be good for, and the final group worked on a graphing activity.

After recess we did Literacy activities.  The Yellow group worked on finishing a written retelling of a story, and did an oral retelling to help them with ideas.   The Red group worked on an adjective worksheet, the Green group did penmanship ( Aa, Cc, Dd, Gg) and the Blue group worked at completing a Science activity on force and friction.    We then did a quick word study period that continued from last week, when we looked at "ack, ick, ock and eck."

After recess this afternoon we had a spelling test on Lesson 17 and began to do Lesson 18.   Many students have misplaced their Spelling textbooks, please have a look to make sure your child has a book, or does not have two.

Thursday January 20. day 1

We started the day by graphing today's high and low temperatures. We then took a few minutes to organize our desks. We read the morning message and then did a literacy activity. We completed our written retellings that we started yesterday. I then read with each group to listen to how well they were reading and did oral retellings and listened to what students had written and we gave advice how to "bump up" their work to
Make it better.
After recess we did a measurement/ geometry activity. Each student was given aarge piece of construction paper and was asked to make a box. They used rulers, scissors, tape to make 6 faces of a box. It was challenging but students were focused.

The afternoon was a fun-filled day on the ice. Thanks to parents for coming!

Have a great weekend.

Wednesday January 19 2011

We started the day off in the Library with Mr. Brutto.   We exchanged books and have new ones to enjoy for the next week.   Our library day changes after this week.  We will go to the library on Thursdays for the next month.

We came back to class and we read the morning message.    We had to talk once again about noise level, focusing and following instructions.    We spent a lot of time working on raising our hands and not shouting out interupting others when they are speaking.    We then did some word study looking at  "ack" "ick" "ock" and "eck".   Students could add letters to the beginning of these patterns to make new words.  They were encouraged to add two letters if they could   e.g  "bl" + ack  black.  ( you get the idea).

After recess we continued to work on graphing.   We made pictographs and bar graphs showing the same information.   We also made statements from the graphs.

After lunch we did Science.     We are looking at forces and movement.    We did an experiment.     Before we began we talked about the process that scientists go through when they design an experiment.  They have a question they want the answer to.   They make a prediction about what they think they will find. ( Hypothesis)   They then design a test to find the answer to their question. ( Procedure)    Then they complete the test.  ( Observations)   Finally they analyze the results and make a conclusion.  We also talked about variables.  Changing one thing in an experiment.

We looked at inclined planes ( Gr.2)  and we looked at different surfaces ( Gr.3) to see how far a toy car would travel.    Gr. 2 created the test using class materials and a toy car.  They changed the height of the plane to see how it affected distance.    Gr. 3 used similar materials but changed the surface the car travelled on.    Conclusion:
Gr.2:    The higher the plane the farther the car travelled because it went faster.
Gr. 3.   The bumpier surface ( carpet) had more friction and travelled less far than on tile.
( sorry about the pic. being sideways)

Jonah, Ezra and Hannah experiment with the inclined plane.

Ella, Letizia, Stone and Charli  use metre sticks accurately to record observations.

Jewel, James, and Thanasi check friction on carpet and tile and use measurement skills to record observations.

After recess, we did a reading activity.   Each reading group was given a different story to read.    Before reading the story we talked about retelling a story and what it needed to include.  It needs to tell about characters, setting, sequence of events and problem /solution.   A retell has more detail than a summary.
We will work to add more detail to retellings next week.

REMINDER: Skating tomorrow.  Bring skates and helmut.
Please return TSO forms, $5, and TSO Media release.

Monday January 17 Day 3

We started this very cold day by graphing the lowest temperature of the year so far.   We then moved to the Smartboard and read the morning message.  In the message we looked at adjectives.    Today is Martin Luther King Day in the USA.   We talked about his importance as a peacemaker and how he fought non-violently for equal rights.      We had a discussion about slavery, how  slaves were treated, and how Martin Luther King worked to have equal rights for all people.     Our discussion then moved to talking about equality and equity.   It may have been a lot to digest but most students really understand fair and not fair.

We then went to Ms. Leung for  Drama/DPA.

After recess we did more focussed work on graphs.   Today we talked about picto-graphs and how it can show information like bar graphs.    We also talked about labelling our graphs, and making statements about the information we find in the graphs.    Things we look at are what is the most, least, and equal.  We then started to ask  "how many more ___ than ____?"     We then did a worksheet that helped us turn a tally chart into a picto-graph,   making sure we add titles, labels and scale to our work.

After recess we had independent reading.     Ms. Jean came today to help with the writing of our next letter to our penpals.    We worked hard to edit and start the good copy of our letters.  Several students did not complete their letters even with  having time in class and having it assigned for homework.

After recess, we talked briefly about some issues that keep showing up in class.    I told the students that  the comment " I don't feel like doing this now",  is not acceptable.  We talked about doing things when asked, and that when I tell them about mistakes that I am trying to help them get better.

I then read the book, "Martin's Big Words."   It told a brief summary of Martin Luther King's life and within it were some important quotes from his speeches.   Some students were very surprised that this was  true.    For homework I asked the students to make a short response about the book,  Martin Luther King and what he was trying to do.

Note:  I am at a workshop tomorrow so there will be a supply teacher in for me.

Friday January 14 Day 2

We started the day off by playing floor hockey with Mr. Costa for Gym class.   When returned to class we graphed the temperature, read the morning message, and selected our cluster choices.  Each student was asked to choose 3 things that interested them and not to choose something they did last year.     After that we started our letters to our penpals.

After recess, we worked to complete any unfinished math activities.   We still have some catch-up to do next week.

After lunch we did art.   Today we looked at Vincent van Gogh, the post-impressionist.  We talked about his art, his life with mental illness and how his art became famous after he died.   His work focused on colour and mood.   We focused on the painting "Starry Night."     We watched a youtube video that looked a variety of his famous paintings and was set the the song "Starry Starry Night", by Don McLean.   We used blue construction paper and oil pastels to create our art inspired by this famous painting.

Thursday January 13 Day 1

Today we read the morning message and focused on puncuation and replacing missing words in the message.
We moved quickly into doing our Math activities and did two different activities today.       Tomorrow we will complete any Math activities that are not done.

After recess we did a dance activity.  We reviewed the terms we learned last week and this week, we divided into 6 groups and we created a series of movements to the count of eight.   Each student created 2 or 3 movements and taught the other members of the group.   Then groups performed their 8 count series 3 times.   Some groups did a great job,  others were more shy in doing this activity.

After recess we went to Mr. Brutto to do DPA. When we returned we had 15 min.  before Emmanuel arrived for Roots of Empathy, so we did independent ready.    Today Emmanuel discussed teething and we reflected upon how we feel when we are missing teeth.  We talked about how different people can feel differently about the same situation.

After recess we did a science activity.  We talked about forces being a push or a pull, and we also learned about the force of friction.  Friction is where two surfaces touch.  We talked that there are times we want friction and times when we don't want friction.    We completed a worksheet that had different images and the students had to tell whether the force in the picture was a push or pull and describe where there was friction.

Wednesday January 12 Day 5

Today we started the day by brainstorming as many words as we could with "ch".   I am noticing some issues with spelling that the textbook is not addressing.   So, we are going to do some more intensive word study and phonemic awareness on things that seem to be a challenge.   Once we get through blends, ( br, ch, pr, etc.) we will work on the vowels and vowel patterns.

After that we did some work on perimeter.  We used 1cm grid paper to draw shapes with perimeter of 14cm.   It was challenging at first, but once students got the hang of it they did really well.    We looked at the different shapes people made on the ELMO.   We pretended that the shapes were swimming pools.   The students were asked to explain which shape that they drew would make the best swimming pool and explain why.  Once again the class had some great ideas.   At this point I introduced the idea of area.    Eventhough the perimeter was the same, the size and shape of " the pools" were different.

After recess we did our Math groups, focusing on 3d skeletons, reading graphs,  sharing things equally, and perimeter.

After lunch, Ms. Jean visited and we did  writing workshop.   We are starting to look at adjectives and so today we wrote a descriptive paragraph. Students had a choice of 3 topics.   They could describe their bedroom, a place they like to go to be alone, or their best friend.

When we were finished writing, Ms. Jean read the last chapter of Matilda.   It was a great way to complete the story since she started it during her placement and it was her special copy.    For homework, I asked the class to choose a part from the beginning, middle and ending.   Draw a picture, and write a quick description of what is in the picture.   This is an introduction to focusing on writing more detailed retellings in the coming weeks.    Hopefully, everyone was listening while the read alouds were taking place!

Our schedule changed a bit today so the class visited the Library last period instead of first period.

NOTES:  I sent a form home about a trip to the Toronto Symphony on Feb. 2.  ( $5.00)
I sent a pizza lunch form, to those students that did not pay for full year pizza lunch.

Tuesday January 11 Day 4

We started the day off by graphing the temperature, and reading the morning message.  Today we looked at synonyms, homonyms, and antonyms in the morning message.      After discussing the message we went to our desks and practiced more division, by drawing sketches to show a division sentence.

We then went to Gym with Mr. Costa.   When we came back we did our Math Groups.  One group did division activities in the textbook, one group used rulers to measure the perimeter of various shapes, one group built skeletons of 3d -solids to see clearly the number of vertices and edges in various shapes.  The final group worked on tally charts and graphs.

After lunch we reviewed the different forms of writing that we have done over the last several weeks.  Today we did an assessment to see how well they understood the different forms.  Today they were asked to write a letter to Mr.Duwyn about shortening the recess time by 5 minutes.    In this assessment we are looking at how well the student understands letter form, and how well they can give an opinion with support in a persuasive letter.     We then continued to read a couple chapters of Matilda and are happy to see that she is using her power to put Ms. Trunchbull in her place.

After recess, we had a catch -up period.   Students could work on their Journals, Spelling, Letter to Mr. Duwyn, Math etc.  that needed to be completed.

Monday January 10, 2011

Today we graphed the lowest temperature in January so far and then looked the morning message.  It was a letter that was all mixed up.  We reviewed the form of a letter and made sure the date, salutation, body and closing were all in the correct spot.

We were also very excited today because we received another letter from our penpals in Korea.   We read the letters and then did a Journal entry about our letters.    We started new Journals today and they have a full page of lines, and I am encouraging students to write more than in their previous Journals.  Then, we went to DPA/Drama with Ms. Leung.

After recess I introduced the concept of division to the class.  We talked about it meaning to share things equally, and that it is repeated subtraction.   We then looked at few examples on the Smartboard.   We went to our desks and used colour tiles to model division sentences.    12 tiles shared between 2 people.
12 tiles shared with 4 people.   6 shared with 3 people. etc.    Most students understood the concept and thought it was easy.   We also learned the two ways of writing a division sentence.

After lunch we continued with the Journal.    I encouraged students to write about what the card looked like, how they felt about getting the letter and what new things they learned about their new penpals.  If they can write 3 or more sentences on each area they would get close to a full page.     We then read Matilda and found out about Miss Honey's childhood and hard life.

We completed our Lesson 15 Spelling Test, and began Lesson 16.

After recess, we did a science activity.  We are going to be looking at forces, and forces that cause movement.   So today we learned that a force is a push or pull.   We talked about invisible forces, and direct forces.    As an acitivity students were asked to draw 3 or more examples of things they do at home that use
forces and write a sentence to describe the forces.

Friday January 7 Day 2

We started off the day in the Gym with Mr. Costa.  Floor hockey looks like an exciting sport, and the children were all sweating and thirsty after that period.

When we came back to class we did a survey about who was interested in participating in Primary Dodgeball starting in the coming weeks.      We then started the final round of Math activities.

After recess we did our final round of Literacy activities.

After lunch we did an art activity.  We used torn paper in primary colours to create a piece of art that needed to meet the following criteria.    It had to show a path of straight, wavy or zigzag lines.   It had to have one geometric shape, and the shape had to be infront of or behind the path to create the illusion of depth.

After recess, we completed art, or read independently for 20 min.    We then did our agendas and got ready for home.

Thursday January 6 Day 1

Today we started the day off by doing our temperature graphs and for something different we copied and edited the morning message.   The message had spelling errors, missing puncutation and letters in the incorrect case.  After completing that we did our Math activities.  The students are doing a great job with estimating and measuring the perimeter of shapes and recording them in a chart.  The others made 3D cubes, reviewed addition and subtraction ( more practice is needed on +/-  beyond 10).   The other groups made tally charts and graphs.

After recess we learned about the elements of dance and movement.  We talked about how the body moves.  We also looked and the timing of movement, how we move in a space, the energy used in a movement, and how we move in relation to others.   We brainstormed different types of dance we do, or know about.   We then  practiced combining different elements to create movements.   e.g.)   use your body to reach, slowy, moving sideways, face to face with a partner.   The class seems to really enjoy the kinesthetic activities.

After recess we did DPA with Mr. Brutto, and when returned we read more from Matilda.  We now learn about her special powers.  Yesterday, ( sorry forgot to post) we wrote what we would do if we had the same special powers as Matilda.      With the remaining time, we completed our Social Studies activity, by describing the elements in our illustrations of residential, commercial, recreational, and industrial areas.

Last period, we did our Literacy activities.   Two groups worked on completing their "Verb Books" and completing their reading assignment, one group did Penmenship, and one group read a nonfiction text on Rabbits.

Tuesday January 4 Day 4

Today we started off our day doing the temperature as usual and in the morning message we filled in missing vowels, and reviewed some of the rules for vowels, to help us decode word and help our spelling.

Mr. Costa  then took the class to Gym.

After recess we did our Math activities.  Today one group reviewed addition and subtraction, on group started to look at perimeter of shapes, one group built 3d solids from an net.  A net is the flat version of the solid that allows one to see the shapes of all faces before it is put together. The final group sorted objects and recorded the categories and made a tally chart to record the objects in the bag.

After lunch we worked on editting our explanatory writing assignment from yesterday. Some students already completed their final drafts!   We are finally picking up speed in completing our activities.  After that, we worked on Literacy activities.  The Grade 3's read a nonfiction text and had several questions to answer while reading the text.    The remain groups worked on completing their Verb Books, and one group did some cursive writing, letters R and J.

After recess we looked at the community around the school using Google Maps and streetview.   Our virtual community walk allowed us to see the residential, commericial, and recreational areas in our own neighbourhood. We even identified some of our own houses.   After we continued to work on our illustrations of the areas of the city we discussed yesterday.

Monday January 3 Day 3

Happy New Year!    Everyone seemed well rested and full of energy this morning.   After lunch, students seemed a bit tired but we made it through a full day.    We started off by doing our temperature graph, reading the morning message and then students had the choice to write about their holiday in one of the three forms of writing we have been using over the last several weeks in our Pathway.   The students did a recount, opinion writing ( expository), or explanatory writing.

After recess we did some Math, and we reviewed some terms needed to proceed with our unit on Data Management.  We looked at a tally chart, tally marks, sorting, organizing, and categorizing.   Using the Smartboard, we sorted and organized coloured circles and then made a tally chart about the circles.  We then completed and sheet and took a tally of how many chairs were in the class.   We discussed why it is easier to count using a tally method.

After lunch, we focused on explanatory writing again.  We reviewed that we needed to show step by step, and that it can written either in paragraph or step by step form.    It is important to include good verbs, and remember that steps need to be in sequence.    Our topic was "How to Keep Your Desk Organized."

We then read "Matilda" and found the actions of the Headmistress Ms. Trunchbull, quite hilarious and inappropriate.  The students enjoy how she name calls her students.

We then started to work on Spelling Lesson 15  alpha-order, syllables.

During our last period we did some Social Studies and looked at the different areas that we find in a city.
We looked a residential areas, industrial areas, commercial areas, and recreational areas.   We looked at what was in each area, and where they might be located.  We talked about how this was true for many cities all over the world.     Then students began to draw examples of each area to show their understanding.   We looked at several different images on the Smartboard and sorted them into groups.
