We started off our day in the Library with Mr. Brutto.
When we came back to class we read the morning message and talked about choosing books of different genres. We also talked about making clubs in the class and how it might feel not be allowed in the club. We talked about including and excluding people, and we also talked about how groups of people can have more power over one person.
We then solved a word problem involving saving allowance to get to a certain amount of money. It was a challenging problem but many students had good strategies to solve the different parts.
After recess, we did Math activities. Gr. 3's worked at making change from $10.00, and other groups reviewed 3D shapes, read information from graphs we created a week ago, or practiced time to :45 min or quarter to the hour. Many children are finding that challenging.
After recess we had our Spelling test. We then had about 20 min to start Lesson 22. We then did Literacy activites. One group read a story and had to write responsed to key elements in the story, one group continued to work on Spelling, one group did penmenship and the last group worked on a sheet that focused on contractions ( do not = don't etc.)
Last period was suppose to be a writing period, but it took the class almost 20 min. to settle before we could start the lesson. Once the lesson was introduced, and with several interuptions, there was not enough time to begin writing, so children read silently for 15 min. We are going to have to work on strategies that will get the class settled and focused more quickly.
There were several clothing items ( mitts, hats, gloves, etc.) that have been collecting on the class coat racks.
I asked students last week to collect items that were theirs and I asked again today for students to grab anything that belonged to them. The remaining items were put in lost and found. If you are missing anything that is where the missing things could be!
HOMEWORK: Reading Response: ( from Friday)
Only 6 students completed and returned their homework today so I asked it be
completed again tonight.

Friday February 25 Day 4
The last two days have been very busy. Thursday morning was very exciting because we were videotaped for our Black History Month focus on jazz music. The kids had great costumes and Kyral's parents came prepared with costumes and camera to create a cool video that will be presented at an assembly in early March. Below is a sneek peek at what you can expect on the video.
In the afternoon we worked on Spelling and Storywriting.
Today we reviewed telling time. Gr. 2's worked on telling time to 30 min.past and 15 min past or half past and quarter past. We also practiced drawing the hands on the clock correctly and in the correct spot.
Gr.3 were telling time the the nearest 5 min. We also worked on Spelling today to get it done so we can do the test on Monday. We had a delicious pizza lunch and then we had clusters to end the day.
Upcoming events: March 11 " Head -a Tete" a play at Wychwood Barns
(Walking trip in the morning)
HOMEWORK: Reading Response: Read a book.
Record the title and author.
Tell character, setting, problem/solution and connections.

Wednesday February 24 Day 2
Today we started off in the Gym and played 2-ball soccer. It was competitive and emotional, but the good thing was things ended in a tie.
When we came back to class we reviewed punctuation and letter form. We then reviewed what we learned about place value but used money loonies, dimes and pennies instead of base-ten blocks.
After recess, we did more Math. We started to look at time and we learned about analog and digital clocks. We also learned time words that will be used in the upcoming weeks. (second, minute, hour, day week, month, year). We wrote the definitions in our Math books so we can refer to them later.
After recess, we did Writing Workshop. We looked at each other's character's and settings and today we decided on the problem and solution that our character would have. We then started to write the first draft of our story. There are some great stories in the works... stay tuned. Ms. Jean came to visit us for the last time until April, because she has a new placement. She showed us video messages from our penpals in Korea. They videos were very nice, and the penpals tried very hard with their English. It was nice to see the people behind the pens.
After recess we practiced for our video production tomorrow with Kyral's parents. We got into our groups, practiced our descriptions and words and actions that we want to include in the video which is being taped tomorrow morning. I sent a paper home asking students to wear "jazzy" outfits to be in the video if they wish.
REMINDER: If you haven't already done so, could you please return the cut-ff portion of the report card.
Thank you.

Thursday February 17 Day 5
We started the day off in the Library with Mr. Brutto.
When we came back to class, we read the morning message and identified spelling errors in the message. We then reviewed the basic math operations adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. We used the same numbers and used different operations.
When we returned from recess we completed several activities that needed to be corrected or completed that were related to our unit on money. We will continue with money and now we will start adding and subtracting and making change. This would be something you could do at home as a review.
After recess several students had not completed their spelling, so they completed that, and other students worked on completing a description of the setting of the story they are going to write. Emmanuel came to the class and he talked about feelings and today reviewed the topic of pride. The students drew a picture of the time that they were proud.
After recess, we had a class meeting to discuss several issues we are having in the class. The main concern is not following instructions the first time they are given. We also talked about feelings as there have been several complaints from students about not being treated nicely by other students. We are also trying to get more success in homework completion. There are only about six students are consistent in completing their homework.
Starting next week, I am changing homework to include more reading and Math. We will do the Spelling in class since many students are able to finish the Spelling activities in one night.
I will be sending home new reading response activities, and also adding some math homework.

Tuesday February 15 Day 3
I was out at a meeting for the morning so we had an occasional teacher in the class for the morning. The class did the morning message, graphed the temperature and then wrote in their Journals. If they could talk to any animal what animal would it be and what would you ask them.
The class then went to Drama/DPA with Ms. Leung.
After recess they worked on a Math sheet about money.
After lunch, we reviewed the character we created yesterday and the idea of inner and outer characteristics. We also talked about how we sometimes use others words like traits, or personality when we talk about characters. We then went to our desk and we drew a detailed picture of our character. Then in writing, we described their inner and outer characteristics, hobbies and favourite food. If students completed this task, they could complete their Math, Journal or work on Spelling.
After recess, the class had 15 min. to work on the money sheet. If it was incomplete it was sent home for homework. With the remaining 30 min. we practiced the "Jazz Jazz 2011" song we are working on for our video, and we also listened to and watched more video of Duke Ellington and Count Basie. We looked closely at the instruments used and also enjoyed watching the happy upbeat movements of the dancers at the time.

Monday February 14 Day 2
Happy Valetines's Day.
We started our day off in the gym and got rid of a bit of steam.
When we got back to class, students had some Valentine's treats on their desk and a large envelop to hold all their valentines. Students were very eager to exchange valentines and eat the treats that accompanied them. Once that was done and the excitement quieted down, it was just about time for recess. We read the morning message and graphed the temperature.
After recess we did a Math activity. There were several items listed on a piece of paper with a given price. Students had to cut out the item and price, and then glue on copies of coins that equaled the price on the price tag. Some prices were asked to be shown in 2 ways. This activity was a bit more engaging than just drawing the coins.
After lunch we had a brief visit the to the Book Fair to see if there were any books that interested them. They can visit the book fair during moring recess if there is something they would like to purchase. When we came back to class it took up a while to settle down. Once settled, we started to talk about story writing, and how every story needs a character. So as a shared writing activity we created a character, Cracker the Parrot. We discussed how there are inner and outer characteristics in people and characters. So as a class we decided that Cracker was a 10yr old blue, red and green parrot. He was raised in the Amazon rainforest and was a very smart, talkative, hyper bird. Tomorrow we will talk about his interests, friends etc.
After recess we had a spelling test of our Science words. Students worked in pairs to give each other the spelling tests. It worked very well. Students had time to start lesson 20 in spelling and we then handed out report cards.

Friday February 11 Day 1
(Sorry for not posting yesterday. )
Today we jumped right into a math activity. We all worked on completing a graph of the surveys that we took of the class. Students asked each other questions and took a tally of the results and created a bar graph to show their findings. Today we did a good copy that made sure every graph had a title, labelled axis, named categories, a scale and that it was presented neatly. Students then worked on other work that needed to be completed. We are currently working on money. It would be great to review the coins and values and encourage your child to assist you when paying for items when you are using cash. Grade 2's are expected to count money up to $2.00 ( coins) and Grade 3's should be able to count money up to $100.00. ( bills and coins)
After recess we looked more closely at Duke Ellington. We read a fact sheet about him and listened to other samples of his music, focussing on what instruments he used and the feelings of his music. He was influenced by ragtime music so we listened to that and also listened to some scat by Ella Fitzgerald singing along with Duke Ellington.
After lunch we had DPA with Mr. Brutto. When we came back to class, 14 students were working on incomplete or forgotten homework and 4 students had some free time for getting all their work done and handed in. Several students are not completing their work, forgetting it at home or not handing it in at the correct time.
Today we ended with clusters.
Monday is Valentine's Day. We are not having "a party" but we will share valentine's spend some time talking about who celebrates and where it originated.
I added a new website to check out. It has several curriculum areas with fun games and activities. I just tried the keyboarding game.. it is fun! BBC Kids

Tuesday February 9 Day 4
Today we read the morning message and practiced giving answers in full sentences. We then worked hard to edit and complete the procedure writing about making our boxes that we made from construction paper. Everyone made a box, found the dimensions of the box, explained how to make it and then think of something that you might buy in a box that size.

We then went to Gym with Mr. Costa. When we came back to after recess, we did our Math activities.
After lunch we worked on completing our community maps. The maps were to include different areas of a city; industrial, commercial, residential, and recreational. The students were asked to create a legend to show what the symbols mean on their maps. They had to think about where it made sense to put each part of the community. e.g.) Would you put a school in the middle of an industrial area? When completed the students used what they remembered about cardinal directions to explain where things were located in their imaginary communities. See some examples below.
More examples are in the hall outside the class. Just before recess Ms. Jean helped the students write valentine messages to their penpals. It will be a nice surprise since they don't celebrate Valentine's Day in Korea. We had a nice talk about "love" as well. We talked about the different kinds of love, because whenever the word was mentioned a collective "eeeeew" rang through the class. We talked how romantic love is for older people, where family love, or botherly/sisterly love or friendship is also love.
After recess we wrote about our maps. I sent note home with a list of names if students wish to make valentines for their classmates. Ella's name was omitted and Kyral's name was on twice. I tried to write it on all the forms while students were lining. up.

Tuesday February 8 Day 3
Today we started off by graphing the very cold temperature this morning. We then worked hard to complete our Journals from yesterday. Students wrote about where they would give money if they could.
The class then went to Drama/DPA and Ms. Leung commented on how well they had improved in their participation this week. ( Yay!)
After recess we completed our Math activities: Surveys, Perimeter/Area, Money and 3d Shapes.
After lunch, we did an art activity that used a wide variety of art materials ( paint, tissue paper, glue, scissors construction paper, etc) and the students could create art that followed these rules:
1) It must have a heart on it.
2) It must have words related to "love" or the word "love"
3) Must use the entire paper.
For Black History Month we are working on a special video project supported by Tony Young and Paula Johnson ( Kyral's parents) along with Mr. Dawson's class that focuses on jazz music. Today we discussed a brief history of jazz and we introduced ourselves to the five jazz greats ( Dissie Gillespie, Sarah Vaughn, Billy Holiday, Count Basie and Duke Ellington) we will focus on for the special video we'll creating as a culminating task. We learned a new song for our video that we will practice to perfection.

Monday February 7 Day 2
We started off the day in the Gym with Mr. Costa.
When we returned to class we read the morning message which had scrambled sentences. We arranged the words in the correct order then read the message together. After that we went to our desks, graphed the High/Low temp. and added a snowy day to our weather bar graph.
Journal: If someone gave you $1000 and told you you had to give it away to 3 people or charities, who would you give it to, how much would you give them and why?
After recess, we did Math activities. One group worked on money, one group did a review of perimeter and area, another reviewed 3d solids and one group started to take their own survery of the class and graph the results.
After lunch, we worked on adding the details on our community maps. We should be done in the next couple of periods. After our maps, we had a spelling test and then we recieved our new spelling words. This week we are taking a break from the spelling textbook and we are learning some words that will help us in our science unit on forces, movement and simple machines.
After recess, we looked at non-fiction texts. We talked about how you don't have to read it from cover to cover for it to make sense like you do with a story. We talked about the table of contents, the index, the glossary, and how pictures, diagram and captions help us understand what we are reading. We were each given a book on forces and movement, and had time to look at the book and when we returned to the carpet, everyone had to share something they had read or learned from the book.

Friday February 4 Day 1
We started off the day with the morning message and graphing of the high and low temperatures. We moved quickly into a Math lesson on money. We reviewed patterning and skip counting by 1's, 5's , 10's. and 25's to help us with counting of money. We then completed a worksheet that looked what coins one could use to make a given price. In some cases, there is more than one way to show a certain amount of money. Most of the class seemed to get understand money quite quickly. It is challenging for some students to think that one coin can mean ten cents or twenty-five.
After recess we continued with the good copy of our Community maps. Yesterday we focused on roads, parks, lakes etc. and today we used construction paper squares to show homes, businesses, schools etc. and we were careful to use the same symbol in the legend of our maps.
After lunch we had DPA with Mr. Brutto, came back to class and read another chapter from Tales of Despereaux. He is not conforming to mouse behaviour and being entranced by music has now put him in a very interesting situation. We had an early recess because we had clusters at 2:00pm - 3:15pm.

Thursday February 3 Day 5
We started our day off in the Library with Mr. Brutto. We skipped Day 4 due to the snow day, so many students were disappointed. When we got back to the class we read the morning message, watched a video about the Lunar New Year and looked at some of the traditions of Chinese New Year, the Year of the Rabbit, which start today. We then did a Journal entry about "money." We are starting a unit on Money so I asked the class to write anything they know about money.
After recess we reviewed the coins and bills of Canadian currency. We named the coins, named the value and made brief descriptions about the coins ( colour, and images on the coins).
After lunch we came back to class and did Writing workshop. We are starting a new form of writing, so I asked the students to write a story. This will allow me to see where they are at as a class and individually in the story writing process. I think this will be a bit more interesting for them and more creative than previous forms that we have studied. I have already seen students writing more!
Today Emmanuel came with Baby Teagan and we were joined by Teagan's grandmother. We observed Teagan, watched her roll over independently, measured her height ( 68cm), and we talked about teething. We also say Teagan cry for the first time since she started to visit us.
After recess we began the good copy of our invented city maps. Today we focused on adding the roads and putting correct symbols in the legend.

HOMEWORK: Complete Spelling Lesson 19.
Read.
(Some students wanted to work on their maps at home but this was not assigned.)

Tuesday February 1 Day 3
Today we made new temperature graphs for February. We reviewed all the things a graph needs and made sure that our scale was correct as well as the dates. For some students, we added a small weather bar graph section to our line graph. We then went to Drama with Ms. Leung.
After recess, we read the morning message and then spent the rest of the period working on completing our procedural writing for the the boxes we constructed last week. It is a bit more challenging than expected but many students did a great job.
After recess we did 20min. of independent reading, and students had another 20 minutes to complete the writing from the morning. We then moved into a science lesson. Today we looked at images of different sports and the students had to tell the sport, the simple machine or machines that were used and then describe the forces used in the sport. I am impressed with how well, the students are understanding simple machines as they relate to sports. After recess we continued with this activity. It seems to take a long time to complete activities as there is alot of time wasted getting the class to settle and stay focused.
REMINDER: TSO Trip tomorrow ( weather permitting)
Bring lunch to eat in class.
See Severe Weather Notice sent home today with students.
HOMEWORK: Spelling 19 ( sentences/continue lesson due Thurs.)
