We started off the day in the library with Mr. Brutto.
When we returned to class we did a review of fractions. We reviewed how we name fractions, how they can be part of a set or a whole. We identified fraction names. The Gr. 3s did a review from their Math text while the Gr. 2's worked on a booklet. After recess we continued with our fraction review.
After lunch we did an activity that integrated several strands of Math as well as help us understand a little bit about pioneers. We made a quilt square using contruction paper. We talked about how pioneers used everything to its fullest extent. So with fabric they saved old clothes and curtains etc. and would cut them into shapes and sew them together. They often did this in a group called a "bee." We worked to make squares, and this used our knowledge of fractions, geometry and area to make our squares.
After recess we did independent reading, to research our animals further or a novel of personal interest.

Wednesday May 25 Day 3
Today we started off by recording the temp. for yesterday and today.
We also looked at the daily high temp. for the month to see what the mode temp. was . We found out that is was 13 C. Mode means a number that appears most often in a set of data. We then rewrote our Journal entries from yesterday. I gave some feedback, and asked them to make the corrections and redo it.
Those not complete were asked to do it for homework.
We had another firedrill today. Right afterwards Ms. Leung kept the students for DPA/Drama.
After recess we did a math review that focussed on patterns. Gr. 2's created challenging patterns for the Gr. 3's to find the rule, and continue the pattern. Gr. 3's also reviewed some Geometry, and venn diagrams.
After lunch we went to the computer lab to do some animal / plant research. We learned how to do a search using search engines on the library website, as well as use some the online encyclopedias. Some of us found it useful to use the Read and Write Gold program to read information that was on the internet.
We are still trying to gather information about our plants and animals.
When we returned to class, Gr. 3s did a eqao type reading question, while the Gr.2 read their leveled book and wrote a retelling.
Last period we talked about how the European settlers arrived to Canada and had to learn many things from the aboriginal people. The aboriginal people also learned things from the settlers. The Gr. 3
then looked at the exchange in more detail, while the Gr. 2 did an activity that got them to think about what they learned about their culture and background from their parents and grandparents. They wrote about and drew special foods, celebrations, clothing, religious events etc.

Thursday May 19 Day 1
Today we started off with a review of multiplication. We reviewed that "x" means groups of. We reviewed the method of drawing circles and things inside the circle. We reviewed that 3x2 = 2x3 and we also reviewed repeated addition. We then completed work booklet on multiplication. We also looked at divisioin as sharing things equally. 8 divided by 2 means we draw 8 things then count how many times we can circle groups of two.
We ended the Math period with some problem solving and multiple choice questions to review
concepts covered earlier in the year.
After recess we had a music lesson. We used the Smartboard to learn the different parts of an orchestra as we prepare for our visit to the TSO. The kids really liked the website. If you want to register here is the link. http://listeningadventures.carnegiehall.org/ypgto/index.aspx We each took turns using the board and learning the instruments.
After recess we had DPA with Mr. Brutto. Emmanuel came to deliver the Roots of Empathy Program and we wrote wishes for baby Teagan and also wrote about our favourite part of the program. Next week, is our last visit from Vanessa and Baby Teagan.
After recess we worked on completing our timelines.

Wednesday May 17 Day 5
We started our day off in the Library with Mr. Brutto. Mr. Brutto helped us find books on the animal or plant that we will be researching.
When we came back to class, Grade 2's reviewed their addition and subtraction skills, while the Gr.3' did some EQAO math prep. questions.
After recess, we did some work on using T-tables to find patterns. We looked at the pattern and found the rule using the tables. We then went and practiced this on a worksheet. Using a table is a good tool to use when solving certain math problems.
After lunch we did a short lesson on how to read information text and find "KEY WORDS." As a class we looked at a simple information book on frogs, and located the key words in the passage. We wrote that down on paper. We then went back and wrote the important info. we remembered about that word. We did this for several words. We then went back and as a class, wrote that information into good sentences. We will be using this process to write our projects. We then went back to our desks and read the books we borrowed from the library. We located interesting facts, so that when we start taking notes, we have an idea where to look. Some of us learned how to use the index too.
We then did more reading, this time it was fiction. We are continuing to focus on retelling and main idea.
Grade 3's did an EQAO sample question and we will review the responses tomorrow.
After recess, we did some Social Studies. We looked at some the main countries where early settlers came from and located them on a world map as well as adding countries of origin and other countries we thought were interesting. We used the atlas and map projected on the smartboard.

Tuesday May 17 Day 4
We started the day by reading the morning message, graphing the temperature and then we did "Math Madness." We are doing a review of many of the concepts learned so far and using what we know to solve different math questions and problems. We reviewed the importance of explaining your thinking is as important than just getting the correct answer. Today we did some patterning problems, measurement problems and numeracy problems.
We then had Gym with Mr. Costa.
After recess we did more work on probability and today we focused on spinners and explaining fairness.
We created a variety of spinners that were fair and unfair. We then made estimates and tested our spinners to see if they matched out predictions.
After lunch we read from "Island". We then went to hear a storyteller in the libray tell asian themed stories as part of Asian Heritage Month. The stories were intersting and kept our attention.
When we returned to class, we chose the animal or plant we would like to research for our focus on information text.
After recess, we used our homework assignment to complete a personal timeline that included graphics and captions. So many have lived such interesting lives in 7 or 8 short years!
Reminder: Please send TSO forms back for our trip on June 2.
FYI: We have booked another trip for Thursday June 16 to the Toronto Zoo ( Gr. 2)
and Black Creek Pioneer Village ( Gr.3). I will need 2 parent volunteers for Zoo and 1 for

Monday May 16 Day 3
We started off the day with our graphs and reading the morning message. We then began our Journal topic based on an old EQAO question. "You have invented an imaginary machine. Explain what it does and how it works."
We then had Drama/DPA with Ms. Leung.
After recess we did some work with probability and outcomes. We predicted outcomes of flipping a coin, and then we flipped two coins and made predictions about what the outcomes could be and which is more likely to happen. We finished the Math lesson off by drawing coloured tiles out of a bag and making predictions about what colours and how many of each colour were in the container if they knew there was 12 tiles.
After lunch we finished writing our Journals and then looked at the how we might level our writing compared to the answers on the eqao grading sheet. We realized that in general, we need to focus on adding detail and be organized in writing our ideas. Some commented that neatness helps too!
We then started our final writing form. We are going to be looking at information text. We looked at some examples of non-fiction text and looked at important features. Heading, font, pictures, captions, titles, and text. We then used our knowledge of facts to write facts about ourselves under the headings of Appearance, Diet, Habitat, and Family. We will continue this tomorrow.
After recess we had our Lesson 31 Spelling Test.
We then did a brief lesson on timelines and how we use them in history. I handed out a sheet to be completed at home with assistance of parents to record important events at different ages.

Friday May 13 Day 2
I was at a meeting for the morning but the students did Jump for Heart during Gym class. If you have collected any money please forward the envelopes back to school. I would like all the money in by Wednesday. The students wrote in their Journals and after recess they were to complete any unfinished Math work.
After lunch we finished our artwork that looked at portraits, landscapes and still lifes. The results were fantastic. After using tempra paint to paint the large coloured areas, they added detail using oil and chalk pastels. The students did a great job of mixing colours and mixing medium to create beautiful artwork. I'm impressed with the focus and attention to detail the students were able to capture.

Tuesday May 10 Day 4
We started the day off by recording our daily temperature and reading the morning message. In our discussion we talked about building more independence and trying to do more work without teacher support. We learned that if we only do things we are good at we don't learn anything new, and that sometimes when we have to think... that is when learning takes place.
We then did a Math activity that reviewed coordinates and movements on a grid. We looked at pixels and pixel images on the computer. We then designed our own pixel image on grid paper. Afterwards, we recorded the colours we used and locations of colours by using coordinates. eg. Red: B,2 B,3 B,4.
After recess, we reviewed addition and subtraction. Some students are still working on number facts to 20, while others are working on digit addition and subtraction with and without regrouping. I want students to be confident and accurate with regrouping before moving on to the next grade, so we will be reviewing and practicing regularly and applying skills to word problems.
After recess, we had Gym ( which is usually held in the morning).
When we returned from Gym we had Writing Workshop. Today we focused on writing facts and opinions and learning the difference between what is true and how that is different than what you feel. We completed a worksheet to practice what we learned. ( I found out Justing Bieber isn't as popular as I thought... that is a majority of the classes opinion anyway!)
After recess, we just got started on Social Studies and we interrupted by a fire drill. We did a good job but needed to review some issues around being safe, even if it is a drill. When we returned I introduced our topic for Social Studies. We are going to look at Early Canada( Pioneers) - Gr. 3 while also looking at how our families arrived in Canada and some traditions that we brought with us- Gr. 2. It will review some on our work from earlier in the year and give a look into Early Canada and our Heritage.

Monday May 9 Day 3
We started the day by completing our temperature graphs. We then did our first attempt at our Journals.
The topics were a bit challenging for some reason and not much writing got completed so another topic was assigned after lunch. Topics: 1) If you met a person that was 100 yrs old. what questions would you ask them and why? 2) If you could paint anything on your ceiling what would it be and why? I got very little response to these rather simple Journal prompts.
We then had DPA/Drama with Ms. Leung.
After recess, we did a final review of slides, flips and turns. We completed some worksheets on identifying these transformations.
After lunch I was at a workshop/TLCP meeting discussing our work on responding to texts, identifying main ideas, and identifying character traits with evidence. The supply teacher reassigned an easier topic ( recount your weekend), gave the Spelling Test and also had students complete a worksheet on quotation marks.

Thursday May 5. Day 1
We started the day off reading a very brief morning message. We moved quickly into our science activities. We made Ooblek ( an non-newtonian fluid). We measured cornstarch, and water to review our understanding of capicity. We then added food colouring and watched as we mixed different solids and liquids. We found that it was sometimes a solid and sometimes a liquid.... very interesting! We the recorded the procedure, materials and observations in our "Ooblek Booklet.:" The Grade 3's worked on an engineering challenge. Using only newpaper and masking tape, students were asked to create a structure that was 1m high and could hold a mass of at least 500g.
After recess, we worked to complete different Math activities that needed to be completed or had corrections that needed to be made.
After lunch, we had DPA with Mr. Brutto. When we returned to did some writing and then Emmanuel visited us to once again discuss things babies can and can't do, and what makes each of us special or important. It was nice to hear what everyone that made them special or unique.
After recess we did some literacy work. Two groups read and two groups worked on dictionary activities, and some worked on shooting their commercials. Below is a completed commercial for "PupStuff: Good for humans but best for dogs!"This commericial was written, produced and shot by Samanthan, Letizia and Ella.

Tuesday May 3 Day 4
We started off the day graphing the temperatures and then we joined together on the carpet to read the morning message that was missing punctuation. We also had a chat about what a classroom should look like and sound like. We agreed that we would sit, be quieter, and work. We all thought that would be easy. We also talked about saying and doing things that can hurt someone, and saying and doing things that can make someone feel better.
At 9:30 we went to see a performance for Asian Heritage Month which featured music and instruments from many places including Asia.
After recess we started to look at motion geometry. We learned the terms slide, flip and turn... and for Grade 3 we call these translations, reflections and rotations. We then did some hands on work to explore the concept further. We had to stop to review what we agreed on earlier... Sit, Be quiet and Work.
After lunch we did a short lesson on using a dictionary. We learned that the two words on top of the page tell us if the word we are looking for might be on it. We then broke into our Literacy Groups. One group was doing the dictionary work ( alpha-oder etc.), one group worked on a sheet focussing on the months of the year, with emphasis on using capital letters correctly, and one group did a worksheet that used a variety of skills we have been learnning all year, retelling, using adjectives, writing sentences all based on a short text that they had to read. The Grade 3's chose a short chapter book to read, retell, predict and ask questions. The books are at each students level.
Once again, we had to review what a classroom sounds like and looks like. With the remaining time we focused on completing our commercials. Some students did a practice run of the commericial to see what it looks like. They can then rethink the commerical to see if it meets the success criteria.
At the end of the day, I gave student a math sheet that focused on addition and subtraction.
The Grade 2's had to look at 2-digit numbers using regrouping. This is a challenging concept so the more practice the better. The Grade 3's did similar using 3-digit numbers. If it was incomplete it was taken home.

Monday May 2 Day 3
We started the day off with the morning message and a discussion about the importance of voting during elections. We also talked briefly about the capture and death of Osama BinLadin. It is interesting to hear what children know about 9/11 from hearing it in media etc. We then had a choice of what to write in their journals. 1) What would you do if you were the Prime Minister of Canada?
2) What qualities make a good parent?
3) What are some character traits you have that others admire about you?
We then went to DPA/Drama.
When we came back to class after recess we created our temperature graphs for the month of May and graphed the high and low temperartures. I was impressed at how efficient students were at making their own graphs now. This is our eighth time making them, so most can make it independently. With the remaining time students were asked to complete their Journal responses.
After lunch I read aloud from "Shipwrecked." I intended on reading one chapter, but by popular demand I completed reading the remaining four chapters and completed the story. After days floating at sea with no food, water or shelter, they found themselves landed on a desserted island. They did not find their fellow shipmates and now they have to survive on the island alone. I hope that some students will borrow the second book in the series and tell us what happens to the crew of CNC: Charting New Courses.
After that we did some work on using quotation marks. Many students are starting to use dialogue in their stories and it is good to use quotation marks correctly. We practiced by using familiar sayings from members of our family. Putting quotation marks around the exact words is sometimes challenging. For those students who were ready, I encouraged them to use more precise or descriptive words instead of"said."
After recess, we had our Lesson 29 Spelling Test and started our work on the review Lesson 30.

HOMEWORK: Lesson 30. One or more pages. Due Thurs am.
Read.
