The fun fair looked like quite the success on Saturday. It was great seeing so many people enjoying the fair together.
Today we began a Journal entry on the proper way to line up. We are having difficulty as a class getting quiet enough to walk down the halls to change classrooms or go to recess. So each student was asked to review what a good line up should be like in their own words.
In Math, we read the story "The Greedy Triangle" by Marilyn Burns. It introduced us to our third strand of math, Geometry. We are focusing on 2-dimensional shapes. We looked at shapes with 3 sides triangles and shapes with four sides quadrilaterals. We then looked at all the different types of quadrilaterals we see in the room. We saw mostly squares and rectangles. It was harder to find trapezoids, kites, rhombuses, and diamonds. We'll look closely at more shapes, numbers of sides, angles and sizes of angles in the upcoming weeks.
We continued with our second acrostic poem today. After that is complete students will look at their work and choose which of the two poems they would like to publish. Our literacy groups did new activities. One group will focus on retelling a story. One group will look the differences in statements and questions.
One group is practicing Cc and Dd in penmenship. The final group was independent reading and using the computer in the class.
At the end of the day we did our Lesson 2 Spelling Test and read more of our novel. Today more drama happened in the story. Eduard was quite happy in his new home. And didn't mind being dressed in simple girl's clothting. He was happier than at the bottom of the ocean. One day, Nellie and Lawrence's daughter, Lolly, arrives and thinks her parents were a bit wacky for looking after a toy rabbit. So, she threw Eduard (now Susanna) into the garbage! How is Eduard feeling? How do you think Nellie and Lawrence feel?
HOMEWORK: Spelling: Begin Lesson 3 , pages 12 and 13 (more if you have the time and energy.)
Using the text is very challenging for some students at this point in the year. It is good practice
to read the instructions and do what is asked as well as organize one's work in a notebook.
